Another Car Maker Scandal & It's Dangerous - FORD

This appears worse than emissions or MPG cheating.
The DPS6 Powershift transmission was used in the 2012-16 Focus and 2011-16 Fiesta sedans...

Ford knew Focus, Fiesta models had flawed transmission, sold them anyway
The carmaker says that it's not a safety problem if your car slips into neutral on the highway.

Detroit Free Press -
Ford Motor Co. knowingly launched two low-priced, fuel-efficient cars with defective transmissions and continued selling the troubled Focus and Fiesta despite thousands of complaints and an avalanche of repairs, a Free Press investigation found.

The cars, many of which randomly lose power on freeways and have unexpectedly bolted into intersections, were put on sale in 2010-11 as the nation emerged from the Great Recession. At least 1.5 million remain on the road and continue to torment their owners — and Ford.

The automaker pushed past company lawyers’ early safety questions and a veteran development engineer’s warning that the cars weren’t roadworthy, internal emails and documents show. Ford then declined, after the depth of the problem was obvious, to make an expensive change in the transmission technology.

Instead, the company kept trying to find a fix for the faulty transmission for five years while complaints and costs piled up. In the interim, Ford officials prepared talking points for dealers to tell customers that the cars operated normally when, in fact, internal documents are peppered with safety concerns and descriptions of the defects.

The automaker faces thousands of angry customers, including former loyalists who say they will never buy another Ford; hundreds of millions in repair costs, many times without actually fixing the cars; and litigation so serious the company this spring warned investors of the financial threat posed by defects in what Ford called its DPS6 transmission.

Apart from the legal risks, “Total quality related spending for DPS6 could reach $3 billion,” read a 2016 internal report that projected the costs through 2020.

And F was just a bit off their 52-week high recently, who wants to guess how this will turn in the coming weeks?

Looks like very bad news for Ford. GM was caught a couple of years ago when their small car engine that would turn off due to a weak ignition key spring.

Holy crap. It's the stillborn computerized, automated Denver airport baggage claim system all over again --- a classic tale of management horror in project management textbooks.

Only worse.

And simpler, too, as this is just basic greed and corruption.

or the Explorer-Firestone tire debacle of the '90s

or
or
or
or anything else that they've allowed to infect their corporate culture

Kaizen, anyone? "Not invented here." Not a problem ... some of us know where that was invented, and how to buy cars that inherently adhere to that philosophy.

I expect that all of Ford's "Flaming Pinto" people are long gone. Obviously, the new bean counters have some serious studying to do.

What the hell are Business Schools teaching?????

business schools teach if the fine is less than the profit, shrug your shoulders and just do it. at least that is my belief.

I also believe that if whistle blowers get 10% of the fine, more would come forward. The feds do that with tax fraud. 10% of what is recovered.

Their students are managers who care nothing about either engineering or the value of human beings.

a neighbor had one of those focus wagons.

she was plagued by problems.

i drive a ford focus wagon.

but it's a 2005 with 115k miles and is our local car.

she came to me with plenty of tales of woe about the local ford dealer.

she now drives a toyota rav4 and is thrilled.

she, of course, will now never buy another ford product.

you can fix the problem now or suffer the consequences down the road.

the present corporate mindset it about touting numbers to a wall street that needs affirmation every quarter.

perhaps stronger corporate leadership would allow for a fix even if it hurts the present bottom line but builds customers going forward.

...or not!

thumbs up.

Dude,
That transmission was a known pig from the start. My son had one. We went to the dealer five times about it. They even had a crappy copy of a memo from ford that basically said "Yeah, they do that, it's OK." Ford even replaced the entire control system under a recall. Fortunately ? his car was wrecked by a drug addict.

The later version in his 2018 Focus is much better, and he has no problems with it.

America is down to two automakers since Chrysler has been moved around to different foster homes for years. This is probably the natural equilibrium: On one side you have those that demand quality but don’t need a real truck, and on the other there are those that need real trucks or have decided the home team is the only team.

Yeah, about Chrysler. A Fiat 500L is the same as a Jeep Compass under the sheet metal. How sad is that?
