OUTRAGEOUS! I'd write a longer response, but I'm due for my insulin shot.

Sounds like the Berkeley-run stores don't understand the benefits of paid promotion. Instead, they want to get their panties in a bunch over what they feel is an egregious tax.

Say each store had 10 people an hour come in. That's a $2.40 tax in 24hrs to that store on top of whatever it costs in Slurpee supplies. Let's say 20 people came each hour.

Nah, let's say each store had to shell out $50. Or $100. So what? Customer good will, product exposure mean ... nothing apparently.

Yeah, I think it's a bunch of whining. The Berkeley stores charge more for all of the 7 Eleven promotions in general. Every one of those stores seem to have disdain for their customers. Some of the clerks won't even speak back to you. You can get whatever they have at any Liquor store for cheaper, but if you don't have cash, I do trust the 7 Eleven POS system over the Liquor store's.

Hey, what did happen to Seacrest, anyway?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Sometimes, yes.

There’s no version of this where excess sugar is “good” for anyone.

Cigarettes have yet to be banned, so that’s “good.”

Being happy is not a good thing? Slurpees are delicious.

Around here, we went with a sugar tax but it's now considered discriminatory. It effectively targets those of low income and minority status. That said, I don't think we'll do away with the tax, just find another tax that targets other people so we're more equitable.

It's a sugar tax in Berkeley/Oakland etc., which somehow includes sugar free drinks. It's just a way to tax kids to me.

I trust the funds collected are being put directly into nutrition education and obesity programs, and not offsetting some corporation's tax break incentive.

What usually happens is they use the funds to fill in some budget gap (though I can really speak for them).

Yep, like the gap created by giving your friends millions of dollars to do nothing.

Hey, if that flies in some places, then they get what they deserve. We know exactly how our money is wasted and/or misspent. I voted against taxing "sugary" drinks but they did it anyway. 7 Eleven's Big Gulp's used to be 99 cents and now they're 75 cents. So much for the deterrent.
