Is there anything I can do with HD-DVDs?

Unwittingly, I thought my kids' Xbox would play these, but not so. And then I thought the fancy BD player I have might. Nope. They were free, but gee, it's a shame to just toss 'em. And by that I mean recycle or whatever.

man, I forgot about the war between HD-DVD and BluRay. How fast we forget these days.

EDIT: I see players on eBay for $25 and up. Maybe you can find one even cheaper at some garage sale in your area?

I seem to remember that there were a few super-multi DVD drives that could read HD-DVD format discs. I have one that is about the right era but it doesn't list compatible formats on the case. Doing a search gave me one result of an add-on drive for the Xbox 360 for $45

Considering that war was waged in the mid-2000s, it's not so surprising to have forgotten.

It is what it is.

You can buy one of those cheap players on eBay, pull the drive mechanism, put it in a USB enclosure, hook that up to your Mac and rip the discs with MakeMKV.

Optical discs make good shims for furniture, or when installing new cabinets.

Wasn't there a psotter on this board who collected these disks with the intention to attach them onto life vests? Granted, this was back in the days when every computer magazine and much junk mail came with multiple CDs for AOL and its competitors…

Yes, I remember that. As reflectors, a signaling mirror, and "possibly" would help you show up on surface radar.

I have seen sailboaters use inflated empty mylar wine box bags as radar reflectors up in their rigging. Beats buying them, and FAR more fun prepping them for safety equipment.

I bought this in March of this year for under $50.00 from Amazon.

The UBK80 is an ideal source component for an in-home cinema experience. This sleek deck is compatible with playback of 4K Ultra HD discs, as well as, the support of legacy Blu-ray and standard DVDs.
