Simone Biles just became the first gymnast to land a double-double dismount, and it's incredible
(CNN) Simone Biles just made history. Again.
The 22-year-old just became the first gymnast to ever attempt and land a double-twisting, double somersault dismount off the balance beam, according to Team USA.
It's jaw-dropping.

It seriously doesn't get old.
The five-time Olympic medalist and 14-time world champion completed the move on Friday at the 2019 US Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Missouri.
Earlier in the day, Biles became the first woman to attempt a triple-double -- two flips and three twists in the air -- in competition during the floor exercise. But the gymnast just missed the landing, falling forward.
Biles expressed frustrations after her miss, saying she was "pissed off," according to Team USA.
But just a few hours later, she completed the double-double dismount, so it doesn't seem as though the star is letting anything hold her back.
Biles is currently in first place at the two-day competition, almost two points ahead of the second-place contender.
The tournament will continue on Sunday, and Biles is expected to win her sixth US title, something that no woman has done since Clara Schroth Lomady in 1952.

personally I would not proclaim her 'the greatest athlete in history'.
In fact, is anyone qualified to make that decision?

She's accomplished more than any athlete in modern times and done so with fortitude, grace and sportsmanship.

A great thought exercise/conversation starter, but impossible to answer definitively because there are no agreed upon parameters and too many equally reasonable ways to define athlete/athletics.
The fun in it all comes in the telling. Recounting the phenomenal accomplishments of athletes of both genders and of times present and times gone by. Thrilling to anyone with a genuine appreciation of what can be accomplished when a physical gift is coupled with blood, sweat and tears, along with a certain kind of lightning in a bottle genius and a pinch of luck.
My vote goes to leaving the tribalism and shut tight minds to the ones arguing politics at the other end of the bar, and tacking on an agreed upon, if unspoken, ‘one of the’.
