Person with TV for a head leaving old tvs on people's porches

In the dead of night this weekend, someone or something left dozens of ageing TVs on the porches and lawns of Virginia homes.

According to reports from CNN and WWBT, at least 60 different people in Glen Allen in Henrico County woke up on Aug. 11 to discover that old rear-projection television sets had been left on their porches—with security footage showing that they were left there by what appeared to be an individual wearing either a mask shaped like a TV set or, uhh, the New Flesh.

Local resident Adrian Garner, whose security system captured one view of the dropoff, told WWBT it depicted a “guy dressed in a jumpsuit with a TV for a head.” Clips provided to the network showed the as-of-yet unidentified person or... entity leaving a TV set on his porch at around 5:30 a.m. local time.

“My first reaction was, ‘Did we order this?’ Not in an Amazon box, it was just kind of strange,” Garner told WWBT.

People go nuts when they realize that there is no way to properly dispose of one of those things (around here) for less than $25 each.

CRTs are rear-projection TVs?

I know rear projection sets had CRTs, but that's not the same thing.

That guy isn't carrying what I'd call a rear projection TV.

So it's a prank of some sort.

But where are the TVs coming from?

Is it some sort of collection site that dumping them for somebody else to dispose of?

I don't expect much effort will be spent in tracking down the miscreants.

This is actually the second round of free TVs.

“... this is actually the second time the TVs have shown up in Glen Allen. In 2018, local news reported the discovery of dozens of units left at suburban homes in the area, with one family finding a Toshiba FST Black Stripe television dating to 1986. At the time, some locals were reportedly wary that something could be wrong with the sets or that they could contain something unknown. No sightings of an ambulatory TV man, however, were reported.”

The rear projection TV we had could not be carried by one person. It was a huge monster of a set. Worked fine the day we paid a moving company to take it to the house of a friend (who is still using it).

CRT's are still in demand for the retro gaming crowd for use with video game computers and consoles made in the 70's and 80's. A programming technique made use of artifacts to display more colors than typically possible on CRT TV's and composite monitors.

If he's done this twice to the same general area, odds are he'll get caught. If he's got a cache of them he likely works in recycling and doesn't want the hassle of getting rid of them. And has strange time on his hands.

I left an old 20 inch TV at the curb before work Monday. It was gone when I got back. If It was still there I would have put a "$20" sign on it. It would have been gone for sure....

Hi everyone,

Seems like a prank to me. In my area, old TVs (and other tech items) can't be left at the curb anymore. They have to be brought to a recycling site. So, if someone left one as a gift, it'd be on me to bring it to a recycling center, which is a major nuisance.
