What can a ENT doctor do for ear ache that a regular doctor can't?

I've had a nagging ear ache for a while, but it never gets so bad that I concentrate on curing it. My family doctor has prescribed a decongestant (something-D) I can't remember the name of. It didn't work after using it twice. Do ENTs have other tricks in their bag? I've tried home remedies like olive oil and there is no wax buildup. I've also gone through a round of amoxicillin.

an ENT might be better aware of why your earache is persisting.

In my experience, ENTs have offered no greater expertise than my Internist GPs, but that was specific to my situation.

You might try to see someone with more of an ear-specialty and less of the nose-throat stuff.

The one time we used an ENT my wife had what we thought was an earache (and had been treated as such by our regular doctor). He looked it over, ran some test right then, told her it was not a problem with her ear and sent her to the hospital for an immediate scan. It was a nerve issue that needed a completely different treatment that she had received from our regular doctor (who is very good).

So don't be so sure that your earache is an earache, or that your family doctor knows it.

I had an MRI brain scan a month ago and they didn't find anything.

Yes, go to a specialist, but make sure you go to the best specialist you can find.

Wow, they didn't find a brain?!

That was exactly my first thought!

I remember in the old AOL days, you could put audio clips in a folder, launch them, and anyone with the same clips would hear it.

The rimshot, drum or cymbals or combo, was a favorite when used appropriately.

I used to have horrific ear aches when I was a little kid. I went to an ENT who hooked me up to this machine that was supposed to drain me, whatever that means. It didn't do much besides terrify me. I finally had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. That completely took care of the problem.

ENT are surgeons who know a lot about the ears, nose, and throat.

Overall, they are amongst the smartest in Medical School. Orthopedics are usually among the best in medical school.

My personal list of 'smarter' among the most common are:

Second tier tend to be Emergency Medicine, (some) surgeons, OB-GYN, anesthesiology, opthalmology
Third tier tend to be internal medicine, radiology.
Lower tier tend to be family medicine, pediatrics.

There is significant overlap, but overall these are what the numbers tend to show.

ENTs are not necessarily "surgeons" and they don't have to be top of their class. They like to tell people that they've jumped through extra hoops and in most cases they probably have, but it's not necessarily so.

If they need it in a particular state (or hospital or practice or for insurance) that requires it or want the accreditation, then the ENT should have board certification which usually requires an extended residency (not necessarily a surgical residency), but in many places any licensed physician can just say s/he is a ENT (Otolaryngology) specialist and do it.

It's best to have a referral from a physician you trust and do a little research online before visiting with a specialist. If you have any suspicion at all about a doctor's qualifications, check for current board certifications and hospital privileges. You should be able to check for current certifications on the board's web site and you can confirm that it's a legit board and not a rubber-stamp operation with a little Googling.

Personally, I'm not happy seeing any specialist who is not affiliated with a hospital. It can come in handy if I need additional tests.

I usually ask high-quality doctors (or their staff) I already have who they would recommend.

That's funny, I never would have thought anesthesiologists required any extra smarts. In fact, since they just pump people up with drugs, it almost seems like they don't even need an M.D. grinning smiley I'm kind of kidding... but kind of not.

Then again, I guess don't know what anesthesiologists really do.
