So my question is why do they go to the trouble to take a photo of an iPhone and then Photoshop it to make the button Oval? what do they gain by doing this?

I've noticed that often Apple laptop logos appear to be covered up or otherwise disguised in movies, videos and commercials, etc.

Could it be some kind of legal issue about using a manufacturer's product?

Lots of phones with the oval button... Looks a bit like a Samsung Galaxy or Vivo... Maybe a Meizu MX4 or Oppo R9S.

Don’t go by the image on the phone. That would have been created separately from the photo of the phone and dropped in. They probably started with a screenshot (looks like iPhone to me), edited what they needed to, and then added it to the phone image.

absolutely! i don't know if money is involved but i have heard that Apple has strict rules about how their products are portrayed. there are a number of parameters but one thing i remember reading is that the Apple branded product cannot be used in the commission of a crime. i would think that while a lot of manufacturers actively seek and beg for product placement when it comes to Apple the shoe is somewhat on the other foot.

That's not an iPhone.

Apple's rules apply only if a) they've provided the product for promotional consideration and/or b) if their product is the focus of a scene.

The logo is covered when Apple hasn't provided the product, to avoid any legal conflict with b). If the product is in the background, it's just another prop.

If the use of a specific brand or product some how benefits the show or movie, the owner of the product needs approval for that use. When it's an expensive item, it's almost always donated for promotional compensation and producers aren't going to bite the hand, etc.
