1.1.1.1 is the new 8.8.8.8

I'm setting up my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X and AP AC Lites according to this guide - [github.com] as encouraged by Gilbert.

DNS servers - It seems like people wither go with Open DNS or whatever is fastest which currently seems to be Cloudflare. 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 are certainly easy to remember which helps.

DNS lookups on my home network will be 20ms faster. What will I do with all the extra free time??

Anyway, curious if others have thoughts on DNS setup.

Hey mattkime,

I ended up going with OpenDNS. If you really want to do extensive testing and have access to a PC, you can try DNS Benchmark by Steve Gibson:

For me, it shows Cox as the fastest but that may be because they are my ISP followed by Level3. OpenDNS was just a few spots lower so I will stay with them.

Good luck!

Are you using any of their filtering features? That seemed to be the primary reason to chose them but I decided not to worry about filtering for now.

Whatever DNS you use, add a Pi-hole. You are welcome.

Might look at that after I sort my current mess.

Just wanted to say that I'm becoming a big fan of Ubiquiti.
I have 8 of their 48-port UniFi switches and their Controller software, and their SecurityGateway.

There's been a learning curve. Sometimes brushing up on things I was already familiar with and sometimes brand new concerns. I think I have a lot to learn regarding firewall config - never worried about it before.

Oh, sounds like a hell of a home network! winking smiley

Thank goodness my "upstream" provider does the firewalling (which can complicate some things on my end at times...).
And, as you might have guessed - not a home network. grinning smiley
