....lead singer for 'The Cars'....found dead at 75 in NY.......in townhouse......no cause listed yet, just found unconscious.....

.......they are saying 'natural causes'......found unconscious in bed by Paulina [ his wife - they separated last year, though not divorced ].....

Ric Ocasek, Lead Singer of The Cars, Dead in New York at 75

Ocasek and The Cars were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018

.....Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ric Ocasek, lead singer of the rock band The Cars, died Sunday in New York at age 75.

Police said they received a call around 4 p.m. for an unconscious male at a townhouse on East 19th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement sources confirmed the deceased was Ocasek.

Ocasek and his band were inducted into the Rock Hall in 2018. The institution described the band as "hook-savvy with the perfect combo of new wave and classic rock."

The band had 13 top-40 singles, including radio staples like "Good Times Roll" and "Just What I Needed," and Ocasek went on to a successful producing career after The Cars broke up in the late 1980s.

He was also known for his long-running marriage to the Czech supermodel Paulina Porizkova. She announced their separation in 2018 after 28 years of marriage.

They listed the 19th Street residence for sale earlier this year for more than $15 million.

.....R.......I.....P........?!

Never bought a record of the Cars, but heard them all the time on the radio. Part of my high school sound track.

I'm glad he made the Hall of Fame, as much as I have problems with it, before he died.

Oh no. I love the cars.
I hated when Ben Oar (sp?) died when he was in his 30’s or 40’s, now Ric.
I did not know Ric was 75. I thought he was a bit younger.

The Cars were the soundtrack to one of the greatest moments of my teenage life

And I was 75 and married to Paulina Porizkova, I'm pretty sure I'd know what the cause of death would be.smiley-excited001

I saw the Cars in a little bar in a New Hampshire ski town before they got big.

Just a few nights ago I was watching a documentary about the 1982 US Festival that featured a clip of the Cars' performance at the concert. Seeing Benjamin Orr onscreen, my mind went to his premature death -- I had no idea we'd be observing Ocasek's passing so soon after.

He had a good life. RIP, sir.

It is what it is.

Their eponymous first album is all good, both sides. Their second album, "Candy O", not so much.

I thought Ric was younger too.

Aside from his considerable musical contributions, Ric Ocasek is the man who introduced what was then known as a "Bi-Level" haircut (and would later go on to be retroactively and derisively known as a "mullet" thanks to the Beastie Boys) to the world, and no-one ever wore one better.

Rest In Peace, Ric.

Ah HAH! I thought I was going crazy when I had 70 in the title of my late freight post, then saw Newton’s with 75, and backed by other news stories. But...

NPR
”Updated at 10:52 p.m.

Ric Ocasek, the lead singer of the rock band The Cars, died Sunday in New York; he was found unconscious Sunday afternoon at his townhouse in Manhattan. A New York Police Department spokesman confirmed Ocasek's death to NPR. There is some confusion about Ocasek's age: The NYPD said that he was 75; public records list his age as 70 years old.”

Wikipedia has him as being born in 1944 and graduating from a high school in 1963. That would be consistent with his being age 75. Will have to wait and see how the edits settle down.

Edit - Article also states his oldest son was born in 1964.

Ocasek lied about his age because he was older than a lot of his peers when The Cars really hit.

Wasn't too big a fan of them, but the open chord sequence of "It's All I Can Do" remains one of the best and surprising I've ever heard.

RIP Ric. I wasn't aware he was that old either. Lots of great music.

I remember getting into an argument with someone back in the late 80s. I said something about the Cars being a "New Wave" band, and he was adamant that they were a "Rock" band. Kinda pointless, I know.

The fact that he ended up with Paulina Porizkova pretty much confirmed that guitar players get all the good looking women...

R.I.P.

I grew to like the Cars after I initially panned them. MTV certainly solidified their success.

I also was shocked he was 75 Y.O.

Always looked like a wig to me.

And I would argue that Paul McCartney in the 70s is the only one who ever wore a mullet that looked cool.

It was kind of the opposite with me. After listening to them for awhile, it got to where all of their songs sounded the same to me.

By some accounts, he was 69.

....they are now saying......

....According to an autopsy report released Monday by the New York City medical examiner’s office, Ocasek died of cardiovascular disease. Ocasek was 75.

The specific cause of death was listed as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, or atherosclerosis, a build-up of plaque in the arteries that can cause hardening and/or narrowing in the heart muscle. Pulmonary emphysema was also a contributing factor.......

.....his wife says he was recuperating from surgery......

I enjoyed reading this perspective of what the Cars represented at the time: as a transitional sound away from the bloat of '70s rock before the '80s went in another direction or three.

"I’m not sure you can explain what the Cars meant back then unless we’re actually in a car, with the Cars cranked up."

"You’d almost have had to live through it to pick up on the shifts in posture, fashion and haircuts, how the Cars and a few other bands (Devo? Talking Heads? U2? The Fixx?) helped stamp out the ’70s, for better or worse."

I did live through it, in Jr. high and high school. It was a great time to be into music. We revered what was rapidly becoming known as "classic rock" while easily comfortable with the Cars or Costello.

Heartbeat City became a large part of my summer in 1984. It would be many years before I picked up a copy of their debut LP though, because of all the radio play. But of course it's their best LP, and fully enjoyable all the way through with or without "Linda" from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

" ... and teenagers today say they hate driving. Where are the heartbreak songs about ordering a Lyft?"

RIP to a great artist and one who helped shape the musical culture of my youth and beyond.

>Heartbeat City became a large part of my summer in 1984.

Amen. This was one of the first non-mix tapes I owned — via Columbia (or was it RCA?) Music Club. It remained heavy in my rotation through my remaining three years of high school. When their last album came out in '11 or so, I immediately bought it off iTunes. Their sound was fully intact, even sans Orr (RIP to him, another great artist, as well.)

One of their producers, Roy Thomas Baker, also produced for Queen. Such great music.

He was only 3 years older than Orr, but that might not have been part of it. It would also have been easy for someone to have seen his birthdate written down and thought the second 4 was a 9, and nobody bothered to correct that for whatever reason.

He first met Paulina when she was 18 and he was 40. Being apparently only twice her age might have been considered more acceptable in public. They married 5 years later.
