An installment of DP's Interesting (to me, anyway) and Useless Observations

Pertaining to this:

The woolly bear caterpillar—also called woolly worm and fuzzy worm—has the reputation of being able to forecast the coming winter weather. ... The wider the rusty brown sections (or the more brown segments there are), the milder the coming winter will be. The more black there is, the more severe the winter.

So what's the prognostication? I noticed that here in my Neck 'O The Woods (metro Detroit area) we have had a lot of Wooly Bear caterpillars this Fall and I thought I'd take some pix of them to compare the brown bands. Here's a sampling taken of five Wooly Bears.

However, we only have visuals as every one of them declined to comment or make a prediction...

I think milder might be the winner.

I just saw one yesterday (Iowa) that was completely black. Are we doomed?

Two foureys, a fivey, and two sixeys... that's an average of five bands, so it looks to be fairly mild.

I'll root for a mild MI winter this year. One that starts late and ends early with a below average snowfall.
