Just got my cable internet bill, and they're offering 400Mbps (vice the 100Mbps I have) for $20/month more.

Can't imagine what anyone would be downloading that requires so much speed. Maybe a mail order bride.

Who is the provider?

Are they kicking your upstream speed, too?

I have nothing to download that fast. And I do PC gaming so have to download many GBs every now and then.

100Mbps is plenty fast for Netflix and Chill®.
Use the $20 for 3 bottles of cheap wine.

We are @ 50-55 MB/s and never an issue streaming or surfing... even with 4 peeps trying to do it at the same time. Although it is DSL, so steady, not a "shared" cable connection.

Oh, and I pay $30...

I have nothing to download that fast.

Me neither. And in my experience, there are a lot of servers that cap at 3MB/s so it's not very useful.

BUT...

Comcast caps my upstream speed at 3Mbps and when I travel I like to stream from my home server.

More downstream bandwidth often comes along with more upstream bandwidth which makes for a higher-quality experience when I connect remotely.

I might pay more if they increased BOTH.

I'm in the camp of "if you need it, get it. If you don't, save the cash". I'm reasonably happy with my Comcast 60 down / 10 up, but I would love to have faster uploads. That's really the only time I have to wait. I'll commonly (almost daily, or at least a handful of times in most weeks) need to upload gigabytes of material (for my work), and I'd rather have it done in 5 minutes than have to wait 60.

We've got a new fiber provider in town, but they aren't coming to our neighborhood until fall of 2020. They offer a 300 down/300 up plan for $10 less than what I'm paying Comcast right now. I'd do that in a heartbeat.

If it was $20 more for GIGABIT speed,,,
Then it's worth it just for the bragging rights.

Provider is Spectrum (aka Charter). There's no mention of increased upload speed, but I'll probably call and ask. We have no caps (at least for now).

I don't need the extra speed, but it would be nice. Right now I use my own modem, but would need a new one for this speed. But they provide one for free (again, for now).

I have 250 Down / 250 up Fiber for $55.00 a month.
I feel I'm in a good spot.
But I can see where you if you had something slower this would make a lot of sense.

If you decide to go for it, make sure they won't require any other hardware updates for the new speed (new router, etc.)...

Is 100Mbps 4x too slow? (For most people, I'd guess 100Mbps is about 4x faster than they actually need.)

I'm sure the Fine Print display 'up to' in front of both of those numbers, somewhere.

I'd pay $20/mo for four times my download speed, and hopefully also get a little boost in upload as well. Currently Sonic gives me up to (but hardly) ever 20Mps down and .8 up. Four times that would be significant.

I don't know that many suppliers of content will do so it at anywhere near what many of you can d/l. And I don't d/l more that a couple of sources at time, so I don't need an eight lane superhighway.

40/5 would be amazing for me.

I've experienced gigabit internet and it's kind of wildly addictive. But my data volume requirements are not that high. There's a reason Universities need that kind of bandwidth. Distributed computing clusters all over the planet running petabytes around seeking the secrets of the universe ? Oh yeah.

Watching Netflix ? Nah.

I like this answer. Depends on what you got. I have 75 down and 15 up. I don't really need more but it would be cool...still I wouldn't do it. If I was on 20x1 I would definitely pay $20 more to get 80x4.

I got a free upgrade from 100Mbps to 200Mbps, no discernible real-world change in connection speed. I would happily go back to 100Mbps if I could save $20/month.

Yes; this. I’ve had fair to good luck with them, but I’d appreciate an actual choice.

No.

I loved the "unlimited 3G Verizon hotspot" for $5/month until Verizon closed that loophole.

It was plenty fast for email, web browsing.

I'd cut my speed by 3/4ths to save $20. I think I'm supposed to be on a 160 or 300 megabit plan now. 12.5 megabits is fine for each stream...

I'd consider paying a little more for an improved upload speed. Speed is not the issue. Price is.

just went thru this with Comcrap

Paid $50 for 60/6 & contract expired.
Renegotiated and now have 400/15 for $50 for another two years.

I did have to spend $60 for a new modem as my old EOL model was limited to 300max.
UPDATE:
Arris SB6190: 352/12 Comcast claims service will be bumped to 400-15 within a month as they're running hybrid-fiber cable closer to the drop.

Not enough info. How many teenagers in the house?

If it's just you and your generation, absolutely not worth it. 100MB is more than fast enough for you to download whatever you like, p r o n or not.

If you’re okay now, the only reason I’d consider it would be future proofing, like anticipating upgrading your viewing habits to include 4K content as availability to that increases.

I bumped my costs by $20 month only because my previous service was stuck at antiquated speeds; 17Mbps. I’m at 180-200Mbps down now. I have no 4K plans, so I should be set for awhile.

I think I have said something like this before, I would pay $20 more for a 4x increase in UPLOAD speed and no data cap.

100Mbps Up & Down is fine for most of my needs. Sure I could use more but I am not downloading 4GB+ ISO files EVERY day, but when I am it would be nice to have more bandwidth. I can make do with what I got.

Sure, right now I have a 1GB/1GB Fiber at work. I'd go for 4GB/4GB. Researching what it would take to get up to 10GB, and if the local backbone can handle it. Doesn't do me any good to get into the fiber at 10GB if it slows down before we hit an internet hub.

It's the source, and every switcher on the way that gums things up.

If there was a guarantee that everything WOULD BE 4x faster, maybe.

I would not because the 200Mbps is plenty fast enough for me. I can upgrade to 1Gbps for $30 more per month or 500Mbps for $20 more already if I wanted
