car paint ding rust

as you can see from my fat thumb, it's very small. Still, I'd like not to have the pimple spread across the hood.

Other than going to a body shop for a couple bills, anyone done a small repair like this and has a method?

You can take the ding and the area around it down to bare metal, prime it, paint it, rub out the paint, clear coat it, polish it and wax it or just lay out a couple of bills and be done with it. To make it all worse, the paint looks to be metallic silver which is really tough to match. Guess it depends on whether you care what it looks like when you’re done.

For a visible but presentable repair that stops rust, I've had success scratching the rust away with a good, sharp knife point, sanding just barely past the edges of the ding, dabbing in enough primer to cover, then dabbing in matching touch-up paint. Not invisible, but it can be done so it's not noticeable unless you know where it is. Detail guys at a car dealer I worked at did this on trade-ins.

pfft, not even JR prom.

How long ago did this happen?

Id be inclined to take touch up paint, put a drop it in the ding and walk away. 2005 accord. Last thing I would want to do is watch a 25 mintue DIY video.

The only thing the guy didn’t do is put some primer on before he started with the white paint in my link.
He should have put some etching primer on the spots since they were rusted, spray it on a plate on the side and brush it on the rust spots. He should have also masked on the area to minimize the sanding and over application of clear coat.

you need one of the fiberglass brushes. it's maybe 1/4' across. used for spot rust or cleaning battery contacts. then a drop of primer, a drip of paint, and then a drop of clear and then get on with your life. you will see it, but it won't grow in the near future.

just an example. [www.amazon.com]

and having a touch up bottle of clear coat for random stuff around the house isn't a bad idea anyway. I think I have at least 2.
