Desk-mounted monitor arms/stands - any faves?
Posted by: rjmacs

I'm setting up a new desk and would like to mount my 27" display on a monitor arm (current desk has an upper shelf where screen sits, new one does not). I may want to add a second display at some point, so I may purchase a dual-monitor setup now. I need a mount that doesn't require much clearance between the edge of the desk and the wall, and likewise prefer arms that don't need much rear clearance.

WireCutter recommends Fully and Ergotron as good bets. Comparing the Fully Pole-Mounted Monitor Arm to the VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand on Amazon, I wonder if the build quality it really worth $75.

Any thoughts or suggestions from this august collection of experts?

I just bought this Eletab from Amazon. Works great for a 27" monitor - lots of flexibility, good reviews, a lot less than the Wirecutter suggested one.

I found it easy to install.

I once had an ergotron. They're good but I'd be tempted to grab the Eletab Cary linked to - specifically the 'like new' model for $50.

The only issue with the EleTab linked is this (from a review)"

...if you want this directly behind your desk, and your desk is flush to the wall - that's a problem. You need a good 8-12" of clearance to the wall if you want to do that...

My desk, because of its construction, will need to be close to the wall (about 2" clearance max). That's why I was looking at the more vertical, pole-mounted stands.

Keep the suggestions coming! I like the input.....

I just got a new desk and this thread encouraged me to buy - [www.amazon.com] - I grabbed the amazon warehouse version for a couple of dollars less.

I also grabbed [www.amazon.com] since it will be doing laptop duty.

For a single 27" iMac, the Mantis 30 is my absolute favorite arm, and the only one I'd use if I was going to put my iMac on an arm:

This thing is exquisite in execution. Very, very smooth in operation, very solid. It's a jewel in style and substance, perfectly befitting of an iMac.

I saw the Mantis at MWSF in a dual configuration, which may have been just two of them on a pole but I don't see an example on their site. The Sidewinder is shown as a dual monitor setup:

Again, MiM's silky smooth, precision movement with just a touch.

There are a metric ton of accessories to expand any arm in a dozen directions. The pics can't begin to to these products justice.

Now, I will say that these might be seen as a little pricey compared to some of the stuff available. I had a chance to check out some Egotron stuff (also at MWSF) and was not impressed. It was truly a budget item, but it did get the job done, after a fashion. Though it works, it doesn't inspire confidence.

It's an option.

I have this one ($30) that I use with a 24" Dell and have been happy with.

It can be mounted with a clamp on the edge of your table or in a hole that you would need to drill.

FWIW... make sure your desk surface is capable of handling the stress from mounting the monitor arm and loading it up with all that expensive screen hardware. A supporting structure underneath may be necessary.

Whoever wrote that review is wrong.

The arm can be swiveled 360 degrees. The base sticks out about 1/2" from the back of the desk when mounted with the side mount clamp, and can also be mounted in a hole (either newly drilled or the cable chase hole, if you prefer), which moves it from the edge of the desk.

If you'd like me to take a pic of my set up. let me know...

Its a good idea but I thought the options and pricing were better. Bezos wins this round.

hell, for another $275,000 (base) you could mount that baby in a Ferrari F8 Tributo.
Thought it might be a few more $$ to get it a more pleasing color, and a subwoofer enhanced Bourkhum Riff PA for the road trips.

Love that F8, Fritz.

I saw it on Grand Tour or Leno's Garage, or both.

It's one of the few 'sexy' exotic cars I really like.

It's funny. I did just that last night. I needed a bunch of patch cables and my OCD self wanted them all to be the same. So I gathered them all up at Monoprice (which had VERY good prices) and started to check out. Unfortunately, if I wanted them by the weekend, it was going to cost more than double the order cost to ship them. So I went to Amazon and bought some different cables for a bit more money. They will get here tomorrow (for free). Monoprice loses.
