InstallMacOSX.dmg according to Apple, is for El Capitan and is dated October 24, 2019.

I'm on Mavs with this particular box, and Show package contents isn't available in contextual menus.

Get Info doesn't give me a name other than the aforementioned or a version number.

I tried launching it, hoping that would give me a clue. I quite the installer after getting a message saying 'this installation will require 7MB of space... blah blah blah. But no version number or other indication.

Is there some way I can check this installer and be sure it's for El Cap? Obviously Apple should be correct but I just want to be sure.

I similarly downloaded InstallOS.dmg ostensibly for macOS Sierra, which has InstallOS.pkg inside it.

Fortunately, installing THAT yielded /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app - I would have been really annoyed if it tried to downgrade my operating system since I really just need the fresh bits for successful operating system deployment.

I downloaded the El Capitan installer (10.11) this morning. The "InstallMacOSX.pkg" is 6,208,897,868 bytes in the mounted disk image. When I tried launching it on this machine (which requires 10.14), it said "This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer.".

RAM,

Start the Installation. Your first window should show you that it will be El Capitan. You can always quit the Installer at that point.

I did launch it, but never got any indication of the version.

Once I got to the 'This installation will use 7MB of disk space', about three or four windows in, I got skittish.

7MB? I would have expected 7G.

I guess it would have warned me that a newer OS was already installed, but if it didn't and corrupted my HD, it would have been disappointing.
