Consensus seems to be female (appendage below part of harness). Breed is Belgian Malinois, related to somewhat larger German Shepherds, used a lot by military and police.

Great looking dog. Glad she's recovering.

Malinois have their own scale. A high drive german shepherd and a high drive Mal are not the same. German shepherd puppies are often called land sharks. Mals are called maligators. No off switch for Mals. Fantastic dogs for experienced handlers with a job for the Mal.

I was told by a JSOC acquaintance that the Malinois is preferred because of its genetic
purity & size. Easier to transport/jump with and being smaller than a German or
similar 'large frame' dog the Malinois can fit into smaller spaces.
Regardless, they are beautiful warriors!

You are correct. I have 2 shooting coaches who were Team guys. One was a dog handler as Marine cop, then again later as a SWCC operator. Their harness is clipped to the human partner, and it is a tandem jump. They even have googie googles for jumping.

Another common nickname for both is "Fur Missle"

More that a couple of police departments have discovered that it takes a very experienced and dedicated handler to handle Mals.

I know of a few claims settled because Mals have either bit the wrong people (it has happened with other breeds, too) or were very difficult to call off.

Responding immediately to the handler's commands is paramount. Fortunately, in so many actual use cases, a 'find' is more than enough to get a surrender, and generally a 'find' is better than a 'bite'.
