Don’t buy Kitchenaid appliances.....they suck!

Bought a new KitchenAid dishwasher in 2009 to replace previous model. Previous model never had issues, we just wanted to upgrade to match a kitchen remodel. Went with KitchenAid because we’ve had trouble free operation from several of their appliances up until that point (including previous dishwasher).

Two years in the pump goes out in the new dishwasher. KA replaced under warranty. 4 years later pump goes out again. Out of warranty, but after arguing with a couple levels of customer support, they replaced again free of charge. Then a few weeks ago, pump goes out for the third time. After playing games with several levels of customer support, they agreed to replace pump for free but will charge a diagnostic fee.

Now we’re a household of adults. We rinse our dishes to remove any major food particles. This pump should not be failing the way it is. KA should be giving us a new model for free. Clearly we were given a design that has flaws.

Unbeknownst to me, KA was purchased by Whirlpool. The accountants are probably milking the brand for high profits while switching to cheap parts. Back when we did the remodel, we replaced our microwave at the same time as the dishwasher, with a KA branded one. Damn thing failed 1 year in (which they replaced under warranty) and replacement (same model) failed 3 years later. They wouldn’t do a damn thing about it. Frackers!!!

I'm probably going to get a Bosch for my next DW.

I just bought a KA diswasher a few months ago, from Costco, 2+2 year warranty. Hope to sell the house by then.

I knew Whirlpool owned them for a while, but from searching I found that Whirlpool bought them in January 1986, almost 34 years ago. How old were those old KA appliances that you replaced? Quite likely that they were Whirlpool too.

All brands suck! They don't make'm like they used to.
Dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges, etc. are all made cheaply.

If they just used better parts, such as better shielding from heat &moisture, and better electronics, it would probably cost them less that $50 to put it in. They could charge $100 more and give a 10 year minimum warrantee.

But then we wouldn't buy new ones all the time.

Well - all I can say is NOT GE, from personal experience with more than one of their dishwashers (not voluntarily - they are what Pardee provides with their new housing).

imho, When appliance pumps were changed from aluminum castings to plastics,
it's been downhill from there.

No, this is not some 10-year-old appliance that suddenly has started failing. This is the same part that has repeatedly failed over the life of the product, starting from the very beginning.

Samsung kitchenappliances are junk also. Replacedrefrigerartor, gase stove, microwave & dishwasher about eight years ago. Every one of them has had a problem or repair at least once.

So let's see — so far in this thread, KitchenAid is junk, GE is junk, Bosch is junk, using the hand is good. Got it. thumbs up
I have a 7 year old Miele dishwasher. So far no complaints FWIW.

I cringe when I see someone washing a knife with a sponge folded over on the sharp edge side. Yeesh.

Replaced the original, builder-grade GE dishwasher that lasted 16 years with the cheapest GE dishwasher I could buy from a local independently-owned appliance center...that $350 replacement has lasted over 13 years so far.

IIRC, Bosch lower-end dishwashers (models under $1000) were the problematic ones.

Knife? What knife? I didn't notice a knife in that video.

IMO, pretty much ALL appliances manufactured today are throwaways.

We installed our Kitchen-Aid dishwasher in 1996 when we rebuilt our house, and (knock wood!) it's still going strong. Had to replace one brass fitting below a few years ago (was leaking), and the cover has worn off the Start button, but otherwise no repairs.

Sorry to hear they've been taken over by Whirlpool. Same thing happened to Maytag.

Our fridge mostly died the other day... we're having an LG installed today. Repair guy who came out to try to service the old one (a Frigidaire) said that we should stay away from Samsung, LG and Frigidaire. He recommended the Whirlpool family (whirlpool, kitchenaid, amana and maytag). Everything I've seen has said to stay far away from whirlpool. Maybe he was trying to drum up future business.

We went with LG because it had the features we wanted, and Lowe's said it is the highest rated fridge they sell. I guess time will tell.
