So now the can opener is a standalone device?

The doesn't look like woud take nearly as much abuse; or is that the idea?

The can opener always was a separate device, it is just more visible because they replaced the crossbeam and raised it. The new beam was painted yellow, the old was bare steel or painted a dark color.

Raising the track would mean that the rails would need to be ever so slightly longer. Did they bring in new longer rails on the bridge or put little spacers somewhere along the line?

Looks good. I noticed they removed the electronic overheight vehicle warning system - why?

Interesting question.

"Standard height" for many (most?) commercial 18 wheelers is 13'4". If they were going to increase the clearance, it really should have been raised to the "standard" clearance (16' on interstate highways; 14' on "other than" interstate routes ie THIS bridge). I imagine most "professional" drivers have been avoiding this road / route and, will continue to do so.

I never noticed that. Making it bright yellow does make a difference.

So, durability isn't an issue. LOL

I'd think that if the slope were increased gradually enough that the 'ever so slightly' would be minuscule and insignificant. I suppose spacers could be used but would they even be necessary?

I can see someone trying it just to be the first.

Maybe, if they really hate their current job, and/or have another one already lined up.

I saw that too.

Maybe they figured 'Ok, we raised the bridge, painted the Can Opener bright yellow, we need a little something in our favor, to even the odds.

Or maybe they felt that the signage wasn't doing anything, and had complaints of it being confusing, especially when giving a green light. And that most drivers hitting the bridge can't read anyway.

And the money saved on powering that kit can be used to help pay off the renovation. Sell it at an auction.

It's a shame that somebody vandalized the 11'8" sign. I don't advocate criminal activity, but stealing that sign and the first 12'4" would have made nice souviners.

Speaking of vandalizing, I wonder if the bright yellow of the Can Opener will get tagged before the first trailer falls victim.

It looks to me the warning system is still there, just not captured in the shots very well.

Nope, just used rail stretchers. Industrial version of a board stretcher.

Actually standard height is 13’ 6”. I would sweat when the sign for the bridge says it’s 13’ 8” because they may have put a 2” lift (or more) on the pavement after the sign was put up. This bit me once and I peeled a trailer’s roof skin back.
