How much do you tip for a haircut?

I used to tip 20% for a haircut. That's $4 dollars on a $20 dollar haircut.

Plus a buck to the person who washes my hair.

They just raised the price of a haircut to $30 dollars locally. It seems to be the going rate. I've shopped around. Only the most filthy little out-of-the-way don't-go-in-there-if-you-don't-want-to-come-out-with-awful-bugs-crawling-through-your-scalp places charge less.

...And those places where all that they'll do is buzz-cuts.

I'm NOT tipping $6 dollars for a simple men's scissor haircut. I will NOT go over a $5 dollar tip for a haircut.

How much do you tip? What's your guideline? How much would you tip for a $30 dollar haircut?

Do you get tipped for doing your job properly?

Here in the UK the people who were tipped were historically the lower paid sections of the community doing a personal service (like haircuts) but these days that is definitely not always the case. You were paying 25% extra on top of the stated price which rather makes a mockery of stating a price.

In the past there were places (barbers, restaurants etc) where the main wage of the workers came from the tips but I don't think that is the case any more.

My hair is very difficult to cut properly...fine and blonde. If the barber puts the time in, the tip goes up. If the waiting area is full and I feel like I got the "express" cut, I adjust the tip accordingly. A good barber in my area charges $15. I would easily tip $3-$4 if they do a good job. (More if she's cute)

robfilms, could you then recommend a good trimmer and good scissors? where you you get these tools? I looked around at TARGET once and all I saw was Conair, lower priced, didn't seem to be of any high quality.

Thanks

$3 on a $12 haircut.

That would hold up to a $15-$16 haircut.

if ($cleavage gt "34C") {
$tip++;
}
else {
$tip--;
}

$4 on $16 = $20

i've been cutting my own hair ever since I went to college. I've on my second clipper set. The current one is a Wahl set that I found at amazon for $20 or $25. It's done really well.

space-time-

my first set of clippers were a conair and they were just okay. i cut my hair once a month so to use a mechanical device 12x a year is not asking alot. u only use maybe 1-2 different "blades" which determines the length of hair cut. most of these plastic adapters sit atop the actual clipper blades and the prongs glide the clipper blades thru the hair. i believe my conair cut me less than $20 on special.

i have since moved on to a wahl. the clipper casing is a little more substantial and there is a speed regulater on the side. the wahl cost $22 at walmart.

as to technique, a decent mirror over a sink and flexible arms/shoulders and you would be surprised about the very decent results.

in all the years i've been cutting my own hair, no one has ever said, "jeez, that haircut looks like u did it yourself!" at least no one has said that to my face smiling smiley

be well

The last couple of years my barbershop tips have been $0. The Robocut lets me cut my hair at exactly the length I want. And I don't look like I just got a haircut immediately after cutting it.
