Mac Mini vs. iMac: Graphics Question
Posted by: steveroberts

Hi Friends,

I'm beginning the search to find a replacement for my mid-2011 iMac i7 3.4 with AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB graphics.

I've got my eye on the 2018 i7 Mac Mini, but I am concerned about graphics performance. I don't game, but occasionally I edit video using Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premier Pro CS6.

Any advice on graphics performance comparison and other considerations would be greatly appreciated.

Id wait. mini must be due for an update.

Is the 2011 iMac dead? And its running an internal SSD?

As a person who moved from a 2010 iMac to a 2014 iMac the day to day tasks were negligible. And I was concerned about graphics performance.

Thanks for weighing in.

No, not dead. Thankfully, I'm not under the gun. However, I'd likely want a machine that can run 10.14 as many of my apps won't run under Catalina.

I would move this to the top of my list: [eshop.macsales.com]

4.0 i7, 2 GB R290x, 5K screen -- add 32 GB ram & 1 TB SSD = $1400... done. Sell your iMac for $700?

A mini with those specs might geekbench faster... its got a faster drive, faster ram and 6 core vs 4 core -- but its missing a deicated GPU AND a 5K screen = and oh, its $2300...

The 2018 mini will be fine. It has a rep of very fast performance, equal to or better than the iMacs.

I have the i5 3GHZ, 16GB ( you want 24GB or more) and a 500GB SSD. I don't use Adobe anything. Mine flies.

Google the performance of the 2018 mini.

IF there's going to be a new mini any time in the next six months, you have me to thank.

I just ordered a i7/16G/128G mini.

If motivation isn't lost, the RAM will get upgraded to 32G, just for drill.

The last mini update was in 2014, and 2012 before that.

I decided not to hold my breath for an update.

2012 (my current mini) to 2018 is long enough. If there's an update within six months, I'll bear the slings and arrows of I told you so's.

If it's six months and a day- or more, I'll be happy I got that much use out of it instead of waiting for In-tel.

Or whomever.

It will be at least 5 years before the Mini is refreshed, if ever.

Apple dragged out the most recent major hardware update for the mini for more than four years. Intel hasn't made significant progress in upgrading their CPU manufacturing technology in three years. I could see it easily taking another two years (three years total) before the next significant hardware update.

Get a 2017 21.5" iMac with the Radeon Pro 555 GPU and you should be set for several years. Refurb.me has them at about $1320. It's less than a six core mini and an eGPU breakout box, and should be able to run macOS 10.14.x.

Not that I have any real inkling or knowledge of the upgrade cycle, but that's basically my feeling, so there we are.
