So What's Your Favorite Christmas Song?
Posted by: Dazed & Confused
Date: December 05, 2019 09:33AM
Christmas music is everywhere right now, radio & PBS shows among the offerings. Rather then 'Bah Humbug!' the Xmas tunes in my typical cynical fashion (it's not just a hobby for me but an act of defiance) I thought I'd post this topic to bring out the 'joy & harmony' that this season is supposed to bring out. So take a moment from clicking the 'Buy Now' button and post your favorite, a link to the music would be helpful.

I'm choosing a rather sappy schmaltzy tune:
Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling

Now where is my egg nog and brandy?...

truthfully, the whole thing gives me the creeps...and i am not a humbug. I am a very spiritual person also..but i'd rather it be just a big ol end of year Smash with good food and rock and roll or whatever makes your jelly move.. with no Christmas or Hanukkah or any of the other 'this is my version of god, there is no other' bs..Fractured fairy tales they are..keep them in your own bag..it's caused nothing but trouble on this earth, and i can prove that.

Not just a song but I grew up with this record and found it last year. Managed to rip it off youtube and I've listened to it at least a dozen times already...

I pretty much just listen to the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack on repeat....Vince Guaraldi's style is so unique. You hear the trio on just about any recording and immediately can identify them. There aren't too many musical acts that can cultivate that unique style that doesn't get stale with time.

I like Christmas music, but don't have any favorites except Carol of the Bells.

I've had that on every iPod and 'Phone I've had, and listen to it often, year long.

It's never struck me as a Christmas song, just that as a kid, I only got to hear it at Christmas.

People say 'Isn't that a Christmas song?!

Nope. It's not just for Christmas anymore.

I like the more "Blues-y" Christmas songs, so...

"Blue Christmas"- Elvis Presley

"Please Come Home For Christmas (Bells Will Be Ringing)"- The Eagles or the original version by Charles Brown from 1961

"Pretty Paper"- Willie Nelson

"Santa Claus Is Back In Town"- Elvis Presley or the cover by Dwight Yoakum

"I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm"- Dean Martin

Lie to me if you must, but don't lie to me and insult my intelligence in the same sentence.

Resist the Thought Police: George Orwell's book 1984 was meant as a warning, not an instruction manual.

Stop and think about this: If you're able to shout the words "I CAN'T BREATHE!!!" at considerable volume, then you have just proven to anyone listening that you can indeed breathe.

Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano

The Hannukah Song - Adam Sandler

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Of course you can listen to it whenever you want, but..."It is now strongly associated with Christmas because of its new lyrics, which reference bells, caroling, and the line 'merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas'"

Won't choose any particular song but I have always quite liked this one. Over here we had a DJ on a London radio station that loved Bruce and had got a copy of this recording soon after the show at C.W. Post College, Greenvale, NY in December 1975 and kept playing it. It was not officially released until 1982.

o Tannenbaum and Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht
There is just something about carols in German that get to me - and I don't speak German.

however, the greatest piece must be Handel's Messiah, the complete work - not just the hallelujah chorus. It is incredibly moving.

What, no love for the hippo? I was incredibly fortunate to have never heard the hippo song for the first time until I was in my forties, along with my young children who also heard it for the first time with me at a holiday event. Now it's shared family memory. OK, still a little irritating if heard more than once in a great while, though.

But for a true favorite, I'd have to go with the Messiah as well, particularly Part One at Christmas with myself in the choir, but I love to sing or hear the whole thing when I have the chance. In the original Klingon, of course.

Not that it was ever disputed, but retrofitting the song doesn't change my 'it's not just for Christmas any more'.

Now if the author could recall all the original versions and just leave v2.0 to the unwashed masses, then that might mean something.

So I will continue to ignore any versions with vocals added.

LOL!

Cheers, Mate! I seriously considered adding that one to my earlier list but it didn't fit with the "Blues-y" theme.

Also:

"Frosty The Snowman"- The Ronettes

"Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer"- Gene Autry

Agreed. Also agree that McCartney's tune is one of the worst.

Absolute worst for me, though, is the Jackson 5 version of "Up on the Housetop". My wife insists on listening to one of the XM Christmas stations when we go up north for Christmas. One year, they must have played that one every half hour. After hearing it for like the bazillionth time, I made her change the station whenever it came on.

A Cradle in Bethlehem by Nat King Cole. Very sweet traditional song. It’s hard to beat Nat’s voice.

If I chose one song, it would have to be Bruce Springsteen's "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" or Brenda Lee's "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree".

But when it comes to Christmas music, it's always been the 1959 album "Christmas With Coniff". MrsM and I discovered while dating that both of our families always seemed to have a love for this album. I suspect that at some time it must have been a top seller in the Columbia House Record Club.
