Apple Mail Sending Problem

I don't send a lot of emails, so I only recently noticed that Apple Mail (12.4, Mojave) is not letting me send any outgoing messages (Charter is my ISP). The error message I get is:

The server response was sender rejected. AUP#O-1580

Oddly, I can send emails fine on my iPhone using the SMTP settings for Charter, but the exact same settings on my iMac don't work. I had been using smtp.charter.net as my outgoing mail server, but when this problem arose I did some research and now it appears Charter wants you to use mobile.charter.net for the SMTP server, not only on mobile devices but also on desktop computers. So I tried that, but still no joy.

I had been meaning to upgrade from High Sierra to Mojave anyway, so I did that yesterday in the (unlikely) hope that would fix the email problem, but that didn't make any difference.

Any ideas?

In the Account settings, confirm that you are NOT letting Apple Mail automatically detect and maintain your account settings. (There should be a checkbox to un-check.)

Then confirm that you are using port 465 or 587 for SMTP with SSL/TLS option checked.

...And the server smtp.charter.net should still work.

Yep, I enter the smtp info manually. Had been trying port 25 or 587, just tried 465 but no luck there either. Thanks for the tips, though.

Edit: I just said screw it and switched my SMTP server to the one my web host (Pair) offers. It works fine, and apparently they don’t mind their customers using it as their primary server (it used to be pushed as only a temporary backup if your ISP server crapped out).
