Attaching a towel bar (or two) to a hollow door - yes, it's stupid

But can I make it work anyway?

Hanging and over-door towel racks won't work here because of clearance problems.

I've got a couple of towel rods mounted to a hollow door with basic hardware (see below)

I knew this was a bad idea when I first did it (because the door shell really isn't thick enough to support them), but I couldn't come up with a great alternative at the time. They've actually been pretty good when handled gently, but the mounts are starting to loosen/screws come out, and it's time to find a real solution.

Any ideas? I'm looking to hold two bath towels somehow on a hollow door.

Reminder: I can't hang a rack over the door. Thanks!

They make screw anchors designed for use on hollow doors, are you using them and having the anchors pull out? Otherwise, that is what can work as long as you don't put large amounts of weight on whatever you mount to a hollow door.

I agree - find an anchor designed for the task.

I'd combine those anchors with a neatly cut sheet of 1/4" plywood laid over that portion of the door, and construction adhesived to the door... THEN drill through and use those anchors (which are probably butterfly anchors?).

Meant to mention, I have had better results with the expanding metal type of anchor, the plastic butterfly anchors just strip or pull out too easily.

I have towel hooks on my hollow core bathroom doors.

I finished a piece of oak, about a 1x2. Smooth routed the edges, stained it to match the red oak cabinets in the house, finished it with a couple of coats of clear sating polyurethane.

Then screwed it into the rails on either side of the hollow center so it's fastened into the door structure. Countersunk the screw holes and put finished oak dowel caps over the screws.

Then attached the hooks to the molding with shorter stainless steel screws.

They've been solid for 17+ years. And survived kids hanging on them.

Something similar to the above, gluing something stronger to the door and using expanding/toggle anchors.

Hollow core will be solid at the edges. Get something like this:

with oversized bar trimmed to fit.

If you didn't care about esthetics, you could use a carriage bolt all the way through the door (at solid edge) and fancy plastic nuts for the bathroom interior.

These Toggler brand flip toggles are fantastic for drywall, they should work for hollow core doors.

Ken nailed this! Those toggles are fantastically strong with a very large internal surface area pulling on the back side surface you are mounting to. I have a gate attached to my house siding hung with them and they are still solid several years later.

And when someone goes to USE the towel, they should LIFT the towel off the rod as opposed to pulling it forward; that way, there'll be MUCH LESS strain pulling the towel rod away from the door.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest.

The would could even be cut or sourced as some slightly decorative pattern.

Toggles are great but I wouldn't trust them on a hollow core door where somebody might accidentally put some weight on it, when closing the door or who knows what.

I know someone who just had that problem with a towel rack on a wall.

Great ideas here, but I just wanted to throw out another- How about those command strips removable adhesive hooks? Could maybe get a bar on those.

Here's a pic of my bathroom door. Pre-drill the holes or the wood will split since the screws are so close to the ends. Very nice SOLID hooks.
