Star Wars Discussion: What more do people want from ep. 9? (spoilers)
Posted by: pRICE cUBE

I watched the movie and throughly enjoyed it. Episodes 7, 8, and 9 were a battle within Rey of Nature vs. Nurture. I was satisfied with the movie itself. Episode 8 was not so great but in hindsight made a bit more sense and set the table for ep. 9.

I did not like how ep. 8 depicted Luke Skywalker as a scared curmudgeon. Didn't seem like a dignified way to send that character out despite him saving people at the end of ep. 8.

What else do die hard Star Wars fans want from 7-9 that would have made it better? I am seeing complaints but not a lot of suggestions as to what would have made people happy.

They could stand to have a few more space babes. But I'm old school. I don't ask a lot from these movies so I generally like them.

A new story. Repeating the same old stuff beat-for-beat is lame.

I also second pRICE cUBE's comments. I had a great time watching the movie. I took four of my kids to see it and they also really enjoyed it.

It was a fun ride. I enjoyed it.

SW: TRoS is exactly what one would expect as a result of asking a Star Wars geek to make a Star Wars movie for other Star Wars geeks.

It is what it is.

No.

The Mandalorian is what you get when you ask a Star Wars geek to make a Star Wars TV show for other Star Wars geeks.

The latest Star Wars movie is exactly the result of corporate design-by-committee, offering as little offense as possible while ticking items off the list of criticisms from the last movie.

We went this evening, it was a fun flick. I was confused by episode 8’s story arc, so 9 seemed fine to me.

Wish we had seen some more cameos like JEJ/Vader.

Abrams/Disney chickened out and couldn't leave Kylo as the main villain and had to clumsily bring back Palpatine.

Near zero character development.

Last Jedi established that anyone could be a hero, bloodline didn't matter. Then they ignored that, by making Rey a Palpatine. Instead of broadening the potential for other heroes, they kept it locked in to certain powerful families.

There was only one transport, Chewie should be dead. There was never any sense of life or death stakes for any character other than Kylo Ren.

What happened to the restoring balance to the Force? Presumably, the Sith are completely gone, so where's the balance? Does Rey being a Palpatine magically even things out?

Completely ignored multiple suggestions that Finn was force sensitive.

Sidelined Rose's character, instead bringing in Random White Dude.

Could have left out the Sith GPS MacGuffin. Narratively, would have made more sense to have the Resistance working to drum up support, maybe liberating First Order prisoners. Could have brought in Jannah earlier, and she and Finn could have organized a Stormtrooper revolt. Similarly, could have introduced Zorii earlier as well.

The kiss was completely out of left field and a lot of people in the audience laughed out loud.

I enjoyed the movies for what they were but I wish Disney had mapped out the plot/story arc of the 3 movies ahead of time instead of mish mashing the 3 movies together willy nilly. Marvel has done this masterfully and the Star Wars movies just look sloppy in comparison.

Just a few thoughts:

- Phasma was not used properly; should have done more with the character as she was really cool
- Snoke was not used properly; just a fill in bad guy with no story; should not have killed him off so quickly and made him the main baddie for the 3rd one; bringing back the emperor cheapens Vaders big moment in RotJ and just seems gimmicky.
- Finn was wasted (his character setup was great being a storm trooper who deserted, but they did nothing with this aspect of his character or with his character in general. If you remove him from the trilogy, nothing really changes. They should have made his role to help turn a platoon of troopers at a crucial time to save the rebels or something.

Now that you mention all of these missed opportunities, I can see why people are bummed. But since all I really remember are episodes IV-VI, they did not bother me...
