5nm chip fabrication! Amazing.

Intel is losing this competition.

Intel is still at 10nm, 5nm is not set until 2024.

Intel 10 nm chips are pretty much a failure. They have been working on these chips for three years and only have a limited selection of shipping products.

AMD is poised to eat their lunch at every level except ultra low power laptops, and is up 300% over the last two years. It makes me wish I had bought a whole lot more.

I made some of the lasers that went to CYMER which was bought by AMSL which makes the EUV used by TSMC.

tin droplets, multi-kW lasers, EUV

I think the REAL reason Apple is looking at ARM chips for mobile Mac consumer devices is they should be able to be FAR better than x86 for mobile.

We will see.

In Intel's defense, 7nm is scalable to the point where it is likely to be competitive with the first few generations of 5nm chips and these "sizes" are arbitrary designations that don’t reflect the specs of a transistor.

...But yeah, Intel could be 3-4 years behind.

Either way, we'll be at 3nm before the end of the decade.

Scary thing is that they can usually roadmap these things more than a decade ahead, but from what I've been reading, not a single company has any solid idea what to do after 3nm.

They'll play with different methods of stacking/layering, maybe do something interesting with gallium, germanium and vertical nanowires. 3nm is the end of the line by most accounts (tho they'll label some variation 2nm and even 1.5nm) and the cost to go 3nm is something like 3x the cost of 7nm so they'll try to milk it for as long as possible.

Well, there ARE models using single atom-level data storage. Is that small enough for you?!

How could Intel have fallen behind?

How could Intel have fallen behind?

Tentatively, looks to me like they had problems with 14nm and had to let the 10nm schedule slip and things cascaded from there.
