Apple acquires edge-based artificial intelligence startup Xnor.ai for $200M

The company in question is Seattle-based Xnor.ai, a three-year-old startup that specializes in low-power edge-based artificial intelligence. The technologies developed by the company are capable of running on devices such as smartphones, IoT devices, cameras, drones, and even embedded low-power mobile CPUs.

Xnor.ai's tagline is —or was —"AI Everywhere, for everyone," which they achieve by employing machine learning and image recognition tools that can be used on-device, rather than needing to execute something from the cloud.

REALLY disappointed in the removal of person detection from the Wyze cam. Looks like this is why. 800 gorilla get what it wants.

Think it will still work if we hold off upgrading the firmware?

Sounds like Wyze should have purchased the technology or purchased per device instead of signing short term licensing agreements that had to be renewed often. Poor business choice on their part, short sighted and they were likely out to improve short term profit.

I wyze wondering the same thing.

Or can one sign out of their account and/or run the camera without connection to the outside?

I don't know if the updated is pushed automatically, or not.

Wyze has to include the change in a firmware update, because similar to Jobs cancelling the OS licenses years ago, Apple did it to the Person Detection license.

It's not the same thing, but I'm reminded of the time Jobs included a ROM-check in a firmware (I think) update that prevented Mac users from upgrading something- a processor, I think.
