.....but the keyboard........

16-inch has the "good" keyboard.

Still has the silly touch bar and the broken power-button, but they've put back the Escape key.

16GB RAM and 512GB SSD are limited… but it's $100 less than the next lowest sellers like Adorama, B&H and Amazon.

Isn't Catalina the minimum OS version.

it probably is, but I wonder if you could use a virtual machine and run an older OS, if you really have to.

Only if you are a super user and need to take a ton of stuff with you?

In which case the bottom rung MBP wouldnt be something considering...

Haven’t heard so many bad things about a MacOS in many years.

Since they dropped PPC support most likely. People are crabby that their ancient apps, hacks, and plugins don't work the same. Most major 64 bit apps are subscription based now and people don't like that either and don't want to upgrade, or try and run an old app on the new OS. There isn't anything wrong with Catalina, The OS itself runs better than HS or Mojave.

I remember they forgot to add some columns in Finder or Mail, someone complained here when Catalina came out. Did they fix that?

Seems to randomly adjust monitor brightness, at least on the 16" MBP.

It does on my 2017 MacBook Pro. Just turn off that feature. I don't mind it tho. I'm getting the 16" Pro. I've typed on it and it's a true breeze. Feels like home. Plus I can "feel" the bigger screen.

Catalina sure as heck SHOULD run cleaner than Mojave simply because there will be less legacy code slowing things down or causing issues.

MacOS is a mess because the only real 'innovations' since 10.6 have largely been to make Macs play better with iOS devices in the Apple Walled Garden.

With few new core features, and forced financial migrations from perpetual licenses to subscriptions, people are understandably feeling like their Macs are getting MORE expensive without adding features they want or need.

I'm typing on a Mojave MacBookPro that I purchased with the likely scenario it's on a terminal OS install until/unless I sell it. Why? Because I have legitimate perpetual license to CS3 and several related 32bit programs where the cost of 'upgrading' will lead to monthly payments at best, or (in the case of my lovely wife and her new Mac), there are no 64bit versions for the Mac (some of my wife's games).

My last 32 bit program of consequence was Aperture. It hadn't been updated in years. Photos is not as good, but, close enough, so I let it go, let it go, won't hold it back anymore.smiley-music039

Great price! Very hard to justify it for what I do with a laptop. I have a 2017 12" Macbook w/i5 & 512gb.
Does what I want a laptop to do and even runs Adobe PS very well. Besides, $2225 (tax incl) is a LOT of money.

It's a good price for what it is, but at this point I wouldn't buy a Pro Laptop without 32GB RAM.

"pro" is a realtive term.

I could be a "pro" copywriter -- in which case even a chromebook would be all I need, let alone a 16" MBP with 32 GB of ram.

RAM is a lot less important than it was before SSDs, or the 3000 MB/s flash drives these MBPs have -- no spinny drive, no lag, no delays, no hitting the RAM.

I think I'd rather have a 1TB SSD over 32GB of RAM.

I was wondering about that very thing.

Not that I'd get a 15"/16" 'Book, but still, it's a small dimension on paper, so I was wondering the impact.

My 2015 12" MB is beginning to feel too small.

Many sites have huge js banners and footers that reduce the visible page to practically a slit on this screen.

So I thought I might try going back to a 13" MBA now that it's Retina.

But $1500 (16G/256G) is too much if I can't feel the 13" screen.

I really need to hitch up the team and head into town to check all this out.

Definitely agree. Just saying that I have hit the limit the 2015 15" 16GB/1TB MBP (to the point where even the trackpad locks up!) so moving forward I would just make sure to get more than that.

Even tho the 2015 model had the beggings of faster flash drives -- its CPU and GPU were severly lacking.

Since you are doing video/audio whcih relies on the GPU a lot now days... 16" MBPs radeon 5500 kills it. Significantly faster than the 2019s Vega 20 -- go back a couple of years to the 2017 MBP and its like standing still.

Yeah that 5500 would be incredible. Hardware encoding for H.264 is hard to beat.
