Speaking of printers...

MrNoBody's thread about the Brother AIO deal got me wanting a printer again – specifically a B&W laser with a small footprint, wireless, and wireless printing.

So I find this HP LaserJet Pro M15w Laser Printer.

Beauty, eh? It needs only 8-14" of shelf depth.

I'm a lightweight user, seems perfect, then I see:

Dynamic security enabled printer. Only intended to be used with cartridges using an HP original chip. Cartridges using a non-HP chip may not work, and those that work today may not work in the future.

WTF?

I was aware of printers using chipped cartridges and assumed in some cases there'd be no workaround.

But this is HP saying 'you may have non-HP chipped cartridges that work, now, but we may do a firmware update for a new OS that may kill it where it sits and you'll need to buy a new one when you least expect it' ?

Ok, I live in a walled garden already, so I should be ok with this but I'm not, sort of.

Let me guess, printer is $99 new and toner is $89 a cart?

Yeah, I just put generics in my epson workforce and got a little "these arent genuine ink carts, do you still want to use them" and then had to OK it twice. ugh.

I will never again buy a laser printer that doesn't print duplex.

That said, if you're truly cheap, I bet you can drill a hole in the cartridge and put toner in......

IIRC the newest Brother multi-function (MFC) printers also require chipped cartridges.

Correct.

I forgot the link.

There's a $129 bundle of the printer and a cartridge from AMZ.

The one-star reviews are pretty bad though, and give me pause.

This may be a discontinued product as there are a couple reviews that said a support call got them:

"This product is no longer serviced by HP. You may search for possible solutions on this support website."

Huh.

I will never again buy a laser printer that doesn't print duplex.

I will never print duplex, never have.

But, if one day the rare case arrived, I could reverse the pages myself.

If that were daunting, there's always Copymat or Kinkos.

My HP color Laser Jet claims the same thing, and will even complain when you put in a non-chipped cartridge. But it still works fine.

Reportedly, it's fairly easy to move the Brother chip from a used Brother cartridge to a generic one.

Wouldn’t a chip from an empty cart read as empty when transferred to a new one?

If I understand the tech right; all the chip does is identify it as an HP OEM cartridge; the printer has other means to measure the remaining toner.
