I think we've finally hit Blade Runner "zoom and enhance" tech.

A year late.

yes, and if I put the singlet 8x magnifying glass from my Swiss Army knife in front, it becomes 800X!

Magnifying crap makes even bigger crap.

Yep, I thought we were so over "digital zoom".

I figured the below would be how they achieved this. It is essentially cropping a 48mp image.

At lower levels of zoom, Samsung is relying on a “folded” 4x telephoto lens behind the hole in the back of the phone, which it’s combining with a 48-megapixel sensor. Then, between 4x and 10x zoom, the phone offers what Samsung is calling a “lossless hybrid optic” zoom, which relies on a combination of sensor cropping and binning where multiple pixels are combined into one big pixel. The use of the word “lossless” implies that Samsung doesn’t think you’ll see any loss of quality up to 10x zoom. Then, between 10x and 100x zoom, the phone is using similar methods, but it’s a digital zoom that will inevitably mean less detail as the zoom increases.

FYI, one of the downsides to cramming more pixels into a tiny space is the degradation of image quality due to higher noise levels.

You are actually seeing somewhat of a pause in DSLR megapixel race. Recent updates for May cameras have not increased pixel density. For every give there is a take.

Folded crappy plastic optics... ugh. Give me some good 'ol Swiss/German glass. I still remember the old Swiss guys that used to polish the telescope parts in Pittsburgh and their super secret polishing compounds. They were always happy to get a few six packs of the good Bier...

You know, I have come to the realization that it's software that is changing photography. Optical zooming is still the best for telephoto shots but that's changing too.

I will also admit that I have shot jobs with my Galaxy S8. The quality of non-telephoto images is quite good, especially since we rarely see prints anymore. We look at images online, or if it's a print magazine, the image is no larger than 8" x 10" in most cases.

We see reporters using their phones to "film" (it's still hard to stop using that) news and events, especially when individuals are speaking.

This^. There's something about that good old glass that Japanese glass doesn't capture; it might be as sharp with higher contrast, but there's still something missing, IMO.

Samsung devices are renown for the image quality of their devices and I'm sure they'll continue with that standard. Any cell phone image basically lacks degrees of dynamic range. Fortunately, my Samsung Note 9 shoots in RAW, which helps.

I watch the Samsung keynote, and while it's impressive on paper, the images are soft.

It can save some cropping.

But 100x digital zoom doesn't do a thing for me.

I'd take 25x optical in a heartbeat.

Nobody is going to be using the zoom at all. I have a nice telephoto on my Note 9 and on my iPhone X. I never use it very much. I'd use the super wide angle if I had that. I'd have much more use for that.
