Got a friend who writes software for statistical analysis, who's about as excited on this as I am on the new Mac Pro.

Same. My PC friend is just excited about it, and he's a top nerd in that Windows world.

It has more than twice as many cores (and threads) as the Mac Pro, with a higher base clock. The 3990x motherboards have 72 PCIe 4.0 lanes direct to the CPU at up to double the speed for each lane versus the Mac Pro with 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes.

There are a few problem comparing the performance of the new TRX40 motherboards with the Mac Pro. First, many applications choke trying to run on more than 32 threads at once. One reviewer ran two instances of one benchmark and got comparable numbers in each instance. Second, there are a few apps that make heavy use of Intel processor extensions to accelerate functions. Third, OS X is not optimized for AMD CPUs. Apple would have to rewrite OS X to optimize it for the different CPU architecture to really compare performance directly.

It's $7k to upgrade from the base 8 core Mac Pro to the 28 core Mac Pro. Apple is charging almost $2k for the base 8 core processor. That makes the CPU in the 28 core configuration around $9k (at inflated Apple pricing).
