Winter on Lake Michigan

Spent the weekend in Grand Haven, MI, a fun Summer tourist town which can also be beautiful in Winter-in it's own way.

Unfortunately, we went because of a funeral. My brother lost his wife to early onset Alzheimer's at the age of 64, after a 9 year battle, at the end of January.

But a good thing is seeing family that I haven't seen in years. It's that sad truth about only seeing them when there's a wedding-or a funeral.

Along with seeing family, tho, we stayed in a great AirB&B. It was an over-one-hundred year old house and we had the whole upper floor.

But it was cold, with temps in the teens, snowing like crazy, and a gale warning plus beach erosion, which is being exacerbated by record water levels on the Great Lakes. Here are some images taken from near the lake shore and from the approach to the pier where the two lighthouses reside at Grand Haven State Park. I will say that the 40+ mph wind was buffeting me and my camera and the blowing sleet felt like I was being hit by B-B's...

Here's a shot from the lake shore:

Long shot of the light at the end of the pier. Interestingly, this isn't a real crazy storm. I have seen waves breaking over the building...

And from the parking lot at the pier. Shot it thru my windshield-I was not getting out again!

Then today, it was sunny, calm, and 30º!

Thx for looking in.

My condolences.

I love winter photos, at least when I am enjoying 80° temps.

My cousin and I would bicycle to Grand Haven from Grand Rapids. There used to be an A&W Root Beer stand just before you got to the lighthouse beach. A Papa Burger and a frosty Root Beer was perfect after the ride. Then we would go out to the end of the pier and head back.

He passed away three years ago. I miss you, Rex.

Of course, normally at this time of year there would be ice extending out a mile or more from the shoreline.

... And the lighthouse would look like a snow castle.

Very cool pics, nonetheless. It certainly shows the fury of Lake Michigan.

You're familiar with the Lake and it's effects, I'm sure!

A great image of Nature's beauty...

Looks a lot like Lake Superior this time of year. I get it about the miserable weather, but there is something majestic about the fury these lakes can have in winter.
