Ugh, just erased a drive by accident... can it be restored?

Its nothing critical, just a portable backup drive -- but not really interested in spending hours transferring over the 1.75 TB of stuff... again.

Is there a simpler solution?

Wow, jdc! You're usually the guy that knows the answer to such things!

I haven't had that issue in years, but aren't you safe if you don't write over it?

yeah, me either. Im careful about this stuff... plugged in a flash drive to reformat, opened DU, selected it. While it was thinking, plugged in the portable drive that had the files I wanted to transfer over... and somehow DU switched to that drive... then I hit reformat.

Poof gone. =(

Copy over the backup partition table at the end of the drive back to be beginning? I think you'll need a hex editor, assuming that the wipe didn't delete both. Did you JUST erase or did you reformat?

Also, what partition type - that might impact your options. And I presume we are talking about spinning platters here not SSD?

thanks. DU only gives you the option to "erase"... Mac OS X extended Journaled. yep. HDD, not SSD.

Would Disk Warrior just make a new directory for it? Might be worth a shot.

IMHO, DW hasnt really been useful in years.

And Diskwarrior cannot recover deleted files, reformatted drives, or overwritten data.

I don't know if there are utilities that will do a simple unerase.

But something like Data Rescue should be able to recover the files. The downside of Data Rescue or something similar is it might recover a lot more than just the files you had immediately before the format.

it'd be done by now if you had re-run the backup. Just sayin'

File recovery will not be quicker or simpler.

I would not trust data recovered by any utility, unless I had no other choice. Better copy the data if you have the original. Otherwise you will always have doubts.

Don't laugh, but there used to be a utility in OS9 that would recover deleted files and folders from erased drives AND preserve the file/folder hierarchies (in addition to recovering things with the correct file/folder names). Why we don't have something like that in OS X, I don't know. I've almost been tempted sometimes to fire up the old OS9 machine to use that utility on an OS X volume, just to see what would happen.

Yeah... I was hoping for some sort of $20-30 utility that might do it. I havent touched the drive in at least a year, so nothing critical, but cant remember everything on it.

was a hodgepodge of this and thats -- all of it on my main client drive -- but wondering if there was something I forgot about.

Think there were some OS X installers, but they are bad now, and I dunno what else.

I did find something called EaseUSA, but they want $100 -- more than I want to spend...

I did a successful restore off a volume once or twice - a couple decades ago now - using some command line technique like what's outlined in this article:

And this stackexchange help:
[apple.stackexchange.com]

Although honestly what I remember doing was something like copying the second to last block of a disk to the second block, as these were the locations where the partition tables (and backup) were stored... and generally erasing (without zeroing) simply wipes the primary partition table. Something more like this:
