Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

The song’s lyrics talk about life, love, etc. that have a personal meaning to me that change with my life experiences.

I have a Joni Mitchell one too, but it would be kinda obscure.

I cringe a bit about Sweet Home Alabama now. Great tune, bothersome lyrics.

In Birmingham they love the guv'ner (Wallace?)
Now we all did what we could do (Not sure I want to go there)
Now Watergate does not bother me (really? Watergate was just hunky-dory w you?)
Does your conscience bother you?

Somewhat more seriously, the Joni Mitchell song is a great example of people in their 20's writing (successfully) way beyond their lived experiences. See also "Reelin' In The Years," "Yesterday," and another one that I thought about but forgot while typing this (speaking of getting older...).

The Police - Every Breath you take

didn't realize until much later that it is like the ultimate stalker song ...

"i'll be watching you ...."

...and how “Walk on the wild side” ever made radio play is still surprising.

In a similar vein, IIRC, Paul McCartney was irked when the BBC banned radio play of “Hi hi hi”, saying it was about drugs. In my remembrance at least, he shot back No it’s not - it’s about sex!

Indeed. Sting, who wrote it once said

I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite.

"I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony"
I had no idea it was about a nuclear apocalypse.

"Raindrops keep falling on my head"
I had no idea it was about nuclear winter.

"Candyman"
I had no idea it was about nuclear war.

Or, perhaps the current world situation just has me preoccupied.

I thought the song Sky Pilot, by Eric Burdon & the Animals was about an actual pilot, as the song dealt with war. (I was 10 y.o. when it came out). Many years later, I learned it was about a military chaplain.

______________

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky
He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them its all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky
He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given
They move down the line
But he's still behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate
As the young men move out into the battle zone

Ditto. First time I heard this exact live recording (here is Joni on stage singing it), I almost lost it with the new depth of meaning. Took on a whole other level for me.

Happy Birthday to you...

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Phil Collins Take Me Home.

I originally thought it was talking about an alcoholic, fighting the personal fight against the addiction.

NOPE. It's about a guy in a psych ward that can never leave. *Face in Palm*

Still a wonderful song and I really do like it. It just has a more depressing feel to it, now.
