Anyone on here interested in old vinyl?

My uncle is looking to part with his records, not sure how many or what genre(s) but he asked me if I was interested... I think it would be cool, sure, but honestly I don't even have a turntable and can't really see myself using one on a regular basis even if I did.

I seem to recall someone on here who collected...

For Sale & Free items, shipping can be complex. Note that there is also a burgeoning collector community, but I'm not wired into that. I have perhaps 150 albums that I've accumulated and played to death over the last 50 years. Plus my Dad's collection of 78's from the 40's and 50's.. mostly blues and jazz.

If you do sell and have to ship, check the Media Mail rates.

It may pay to use them, especially if you have a lot to send to one location.

As a long-time eBay-er, I keep expecting that my nice LP copy of “Thriller” will be worth something someday.

The problem is, of course, that there are 25 million Thriller LPs out there.

On the other hand, we came across a bunch of old 45’s in an estate, and I went through and checked what each was going for. Most were a couple bucks at most, but one that I’d never heard of was fetching, like, $75. And that’s (roughly, it was awhile ago) what we got for it too- and it sold quickly.

Things that are popular but common aren’t worth much.
Things that are uncommon but not popular also aren’t worth much.
But things that are popular (sometimes only in certain niches) and uncommon can sometimes be worth quite a bit.
Go figure.

Is discogs.com still one of the better sites to estimate value of albums?

To me they're all worth the same... nothing. Scratchy, took up a lot of room, skips, pops, etc. My wife still has a few albums she refused to get rid of and a turntable. She hasn't listened to any of them in probably at least 20 years. She has a bunch of cassettes too.

My brother and I have pant-loads of vinyl all in storage. We use to buy and sell (mostly rnr and r&b) until the age of CDs. Then most vinyl became worthless till the kids discovered it again.
Still, most places might offer a buck a piece unless it's very obscure.

I set up my old Philips and Ortofon last year with the intention of digitizing those LPs what haven't made it to CDs, or if they have, they were made from EQ masters that sound like ...
But mostly I listen to modern rips of properly remastered LPs.

There is something intrinsically wonderful about LPs and 45s.

OK, so he says about 75-100 albums from the 70s-80s, some boxed classical. Nothing more specific.

As mentioned here a year or two back I did start to cull my vast collection. I intended to start by moving on LPs that had come to me accidentally as in job lots that had one or two I wanted or, in the case of the first one I sold, ones left in apartments I rented when a lot younger. The LP in question was Nick Drake's 'Five Leaves Left' which I found very pleasant listening but was not really part of my vinyl collecting history so would be happy with buying via iTunes. Looked up possible values and found that sold prices varied enormously so further investigation revealed that the initial releases had misprints to labels and sleeves and these were worth a lot more. Turned out the one I had was one of these early ones and it sold on eBay for £447.00.

That's only if you abused them. I always have taken good care of my albums and with very few exceptions they still sound great. No scratchiness, skips or pops.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Same here. I was very happy to lend music to friends in the decades before the internet but never would lend out a record. If they wanted to listen to music I would tape a copy for them.

Thanks for remembering me, hal. Yeah I like LPs but am not currently in Collecting Mode necessarily.

My advice, mikebw:

For a quick sale, sell them as a "lot" on social media (Facebook is best) and craigslist. Advertise or accept a price nearly zero, if not zero. Or just truck them to your nearest used record store and accept even less.

If you'd like a project, and more money, list them on Discogs and just let them sit there so long as you have safe storage for them. Collectors looking for something will search Discogs as well as eBay and local sales, except unlike eBay and local listings, what you have available won't quickly be forgotten/lost.

Discogs is a fantastic (and free) site to keep a database for what you have, and tag items as being for sale, or not.
