What if it was a truly deadly virus..

WHO has given Covid 19 an estimated 3.4% mortality rate - that is bad, but we are just as vulnerable to other viruses. Imagine what would happen if any of these became a worldwide pandemic. Don't scoff - it could happen (but hopefully never will)

Marburg Virus - 80% mortality rate
Ebola - 71%
Hantavirus - 36%

They already have leaned - how to stock-up on hand sanitizers and bath tissue, beyond that I don't know. There are entire swaths of people in this country who live in blissful, willful ignorance.

This will be bad enough, no “what if”s needed.

I still don't know WTF people are going to do with all the bath tissue. No one is using more because of this.

I'm thinking this is a dry run for something along those lines. H5N1 was much more deadly, but not a as widespread.

Word.

No one is using more because of this.

That's not the tissue issue.

It's in the event one can't venture out because of the likelihood of getting infected, and avoiding lines.

Toilet paper is needed, outbreak or not.

As I believe with many stockpiles, better to have them and not need 'em, than the other way round.

SARS was 11%, according to wikipedia.

With large-scale screening and active medical attention, COVID-19 is less than 1%.

Let's sure hope 1) we take this seriously and still 2) learn for the next,

I don't know about you, but it sure seems we are losing the real version of Pandemic Legacy we started this year.

Keep an eye on the Costco "Merchandise Return" line over the next several months to get a sense of what people are returning, and carefully check the packaging/date codes when you're buying items in the future to be sure it's "fresh".

Same goes for bottled water and sacks of rice.

I think you all are assuming that this virus is static. It is not. There is already a lot to suggest that it is evolving: [www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

We are living in the real version of the movie "Contagion". (Good flick, BTW.)

But there is a big difference in the mortality rate. In the movie it was 85+% (just guessing). So the answer to your "what if" question is in the movie.

Influenza 1918 is a episode of the PBS American Experience series, they've resurrected it and it's currently replaying - worth the search!

"What if it were a truly deadly virus?"

Watch the 1970's BBC series "Survivors" for an idea. It covers what could happen if a global virus, spreading from the far east by global travel, were to kill 95% of the world's human population.

What remains to be seen is whether such evolution leads to the predominance of a more benign form of the virus.

Best hope would be that the inevitable community spread through the population will eventually favor a form that is less prone to migrate into the lungs, but this is a hope, not an expectation.

Every new disease is different.

How’s this for “dark”?

If humans won’t control their overpopulation and slow destruction of the earth, maybe nature will do it for them.

Yeah, if it was a truly deadly virus we would be a lot closer to meeting our CO2 emission goals.

At least one paper suggests that human intervention may have already affected which direction the virus goes: [academic.oup.com]

Well, the more lethal viruses tend to burn out their host population more quickly and thus have a harder time spreading. The covid-19 virus is a near perfect (from a virus standpoint) combination of transmission ability and limited lethality. It is still a lot worse than the flu, but it tends to spread instead of killing off its hosts.
