Would you go to the barber and get a haircut?
Posted by: freeradical
Date: March 19, 2020 12:11PM
I just went to my local market, and took a stroll through the parking lot.

The barber shop is open, and the barber was giving someone a haircut.

Neither person was wearing a mask or gloves, or taking any sort of precautions.

Interesting.

Nope.

Then again, it has been many years since I had someone outside my home give me a haircut. We own and use electric clippers.

But if I needed a haircut and required the services of a shop to trim it, I'd just let my hair grow.

Is it possible that the person receiving the haircut was one of the other workers in the shop? If they had to be there anyway, might as well keep busy.

Free,

Nope. That would be an utter failure in social distancing.

Wearing gloves is a bad thing, not a good thing, in terms of virus spreading.

Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow, but send your barber $10 every time you think about getting it cut.

I was going to get my hair cut, but then the SIP mandate.

And I've been needing one for awhile, anyway.

Let me think about it. My poor barber has been semi retired for years, and I feel bad for him if he calls it quits.

I'm torn about it. I walked into a barber shop this morning and walked back out.

Thinking about a crew cut to eliminate the need for a while.

I did get one about a week ago, before the most recent social distancing stuff was being advocated in NOLA and things got really bad here**. I wondered whether or not I should have gotten one, but if I hadn't, my hair would have become totally unmanageable and I doubt I would have been able to properly cut it myself.

In the shop, nobody was wearing gloves or anything, but the only people I had direct contact with were the guy doing the cut (obviously), and also the owner of the shop -- who (as I mentioned in another post) is a 93-year old WWII vet. I *did* shake hands with him, and I thought ... if he gives it to me, that'd suck, but if I give it to him... well, that'd probably be it for him. In retrospect, I should probably have done a fist bump with him, doubt he would have understood a Vulcan salute. My barber had a slight cough, but for that matter, so have I, for about the last 2-3 weeks (allergies), and the only other person in the shop I would have really been concerned about was the girlfriend of one of the guys who was getting a cut, who sneezed rather loudly... but again, this could have been allergies for all we know.

** We're currently at 231 cases in the city and 8 deaths. What's really disturbing (to me) is this graph:

Freya says, 'Hello from NOLA, baby!' (Laissez bon temps rouler!)

Got mine cut a week ago before things really heated up, guy that's been cutting my hair for decades (he started cutting hair in the Navy during the Vietnam War), he's pretty much retired but runs a shop from his home, complete with barber chair and mirrors. Very few customers always has a same day opening. It had been 5 months since my last hair cut, I didn't want it to stretch much longer.

Only thing I was thinking when I went last week was "I sure am getting shaggy." Did not give the contact thing a thought. Not many in the shop at the time and it seems that I might have gotten away with it.

Actually, it was my wife who mentioned more than once "you NEED a haircut."

Not an option now.

Went to a funeral on Saturday where we kept our distance and avoided hugs (hard to do!).

I keep my hair short. Get a cut every 3-4 weeks. Last one was 10 days ago. I'm gonna have to train the wife on how to use electric clippers with some YouTube videos. If she screws up, at least I'm working from home!

Nah, I already got a haircut from the stock market. smiley-shocked003

Seriously though, I haven't been to a barber since 2007 when I retired from my day job. I started to buzz cut my hair with my own clippers and tended the beard with a beard trimmer until about 18 months ago. I decided to let my freak flag fly and haven't done anything to my hair/beard except trim around my pie hole so I could eat without a whisker or two getting in the way.

I'm debating weather to go back to the buzz cut, as I'm well into the garden gnome look and it's getting tiresome. (I really have to watch when I zip my jacket up!) eye twitch smiley

My wife and I cut each other's hair. We do it whenever she says she needs a haircut. It took me several tries to get it right. Fortunately, we're both married so we don't have to impress anybody else!

When I tell people I've been using the RoboCut for over 20 years (an offshoot of the infamous Flowbee), they're always, 100% of the time, quite amused.

Solidarity!

Mine just stopped working about 6 weeks ago, and when I went to replace it, the reviews had gotten so bad on the existing company and units, that I decided to try the Flowbee for the first time ever. It's a really different device, only done two cuts with it so far. It's fine, just bulkier and requires a different approach. Can't offer any suggestions on new blades for the RoboCut. Wish I could trust that it's still good, because I'd switch back in a heartbeat.

Got mine cut 2 days ago. There was one other guy two chairs over (more than 6 feet distant), and our 2 "stylists", and a receptionist up front. Normally there are one or two other clients present.

You know, if I did that, by the time the SIP order was lifted, my hair would have grown to near normal!

But even before this, there was a dearth of actual barbers, and even fewer good ones.

That's part of the reason my hair is getting much longer than normal- my one concession to personal vanity. (Ok, maybe I have more than one.)

I hate living with a bad hair cut.

I've never been a 'high and tight' style fan, but it would save time in the shower.

I shave my head in the shower, so I don't need to go to a barber. I did let my hair "grow" over the winter. Every two weeks, I was using the #2 blade to keep it short, then eventually went to the #1 blade. Went back to shaving it completely last week.
