So, this is what it's like to have a "mop top."

Haven't seen any kind of haircutter since retiring from my day job, 13 years ago. I started to buzz it down myself to about heavy grit sandpaper after that.

However, for nearly two years I've let the beard and hair go wild. Only cutting done is around my pie hole, and that's it.

I'm looking more and more like a garden gnome.

No.

I trimmed the bottom of the back and around the ears, and just over my eyes, so I don't look like Ralph.

It looks ok when combed and a touch of product is used.

Normally, just the former, not the latter.

So, yes, professional help is needed to fix it.

But I'll survive.

If (assuming there is one) Lady-o is cool with it, what anyone else thinks is irrelevant. Personally I like the garden gnome look and would rock it myself except that unlike the hair on top of my head, the longer my beard gets the straighter it gets and the more closely it wants to follow the contours of my face, so the longer I grow my beard beyond a half inch or so the weirder it looks.

As for the rest of my hair, it is finally long enough to get all of it in one ponytail so I'm good.

Hah! I have the opposite problem. My facial hair is curly and wiry -- if I let it grow too long, I get a fuzzy cloud around the bottom of my face.

hair is long, and the beard is 95% grey now.

My beard doesn't grow out long? Is that a thing. Like even a year later the longest it might be is 1/2"

as far as I can tell, this would be impossible for me. Not even half that length. Should we post pictures?

Well, the "Au Naturelle/hairy back" look is very in right now.

LOL!

That would be the bottom of the back, not my back.

I do have a couple of the garden rake attachments to cut hair to length.

As were are SIP'ed, I could try to get the length down to 4".

I think a Flowbee would work well in that situation.

My wife and I have been cutting each others' hair for 40 years. It took a while to figure it out and we've both looked pretty bad at times. Fortunately, we're both married and so don't have to impress anybody!

I wasn't joking earlier when I said the "Au Naturelle/hairy back" look is very in right now.

Though it might be a little bit too much of a recent trend to have caught on everywhere.

As with anything else the opinion of one's partner on the matter counts for far more than what is "trendy" or "in". Personally I much prefer the feel of fur to the feel of prickly stubble. Your mileage may vary.

No. My wife has been cutting my hair for the 56 years we have been married. She also cut our kid's hair until they left home.

My father would do the same for all six of us kids.

Told my wife I wanted to be cremated.
She made me an appointment for Tuesday.

If anyone is interested in learning to cut their own hair. Now is the perfect time to learn. No one will see the early mistakes. It'll all (well mostly) grow back by the time life hopefully gets back to normal.

Says you! I strongly recommend you try waxing those bits yourself before recommending the procedure to anyone else. Either that, or just watch this scene from The 40 Year Old Virgin* and imagine that happening to far more sensitive areas than one's chest-

(Warning- Swearing) [www.youtube.com]

To each his or her own, I suppose. I subscribe to a different theory:

Dude,
You're a dude
Dudes are hairy
Be a dude.

Or put another way, you knew I was a hairy beast when you met me and this is what you signed up for.

*Side Note- If you've ever wondered what I'm like in real life, Seth Rogen's character "Cal" in that film is as close as I've ever seen to myself, both in personality and to an extent in looks as well, in popular media.

Yeah. I tend to go every 6-8 weeks, and last visit was mid January. Usual signal to do it is when I wake up some morning and think "where did all this hair come from?"

Shoulda gone mid-March but was preoccupied with everything else that needed to be done.

Fortunately I have a hat that I really like. I will probably wear it a lot this Spring.
