Also, yes, install the zoom app. I'd pick the laptop and keep it plugged in.

I would think pants are optional.

If you can add additional lighting you will look like less of a slacker or horror film villain. I have a floor lamp that has 3 bulbs but a desk lamp will do in helping you not have the overhead raccoon eyes look.

Also, an uncluttered background looks more professional and focused.

Test your connection well in advance in case you have any connection issues.

Biggest suggestion: mute your mike whenever you aren't speaking. Don't be one of those who feeds background noise into the call constantly. I use a headset that has a microphone and mute button on the cord. Works really well.

Remember to look more to the camera rather than the screen.
If using a laptop then place it up higher than usual, viewing people from below is not as good as slightly above.
Make sure there is nothing in the background that will embarrass you.

Have fun

Also make it known to other dwellers in the home not to appear in the background, especially in their undies or less. Also let the others know not to shout things that might not be safe for work.

Buy a Chromebook and put nothing on it but the Zoom app. Use a VPN to keep them from harvesting your location.

Dress fully. Didn’t happen to me but an acquaintance was in a group talk and someone stood up suddenly after a drink got spilled and he forgot he only had boxer bottoms on.

Forgot, you can mute your mike by pressing the space bar.

Zoom also allows you to have a virtual background so that people don't see what's actually behind you.

Make sure you have the most recent version of Zoom! (And maybe consider the IT version, I posted about that below.)

Agreed about the virtual background.

No other occupants of the dwelling, but I did read that Zoom knows and harvests what other programs are running, and maybe even what browser windows are open. Luckily, I keep all my Japanese tentacle porn on a special flash drive.

Great comments; just add that a decent microphone is a must.

So you have a url for a Zoom meeting given to you by your institution? Roll your own and you get 40 minutes. But have your institution, which has a paid subscription, create one and your time is unlimited. Note that the url can be reused, I believe, indefinitely.

Curious where you read that; their privacy policy specifically says the opposite.

“Zoom Video Communications is facing increased scrutiny over customer privacy this month as New York's top prosecutor is probing the suddenly popular teleconferencing company's security practices during the coronavirus work-from-home movement . Zoom also is being sued in California for allegedly giving users' personal data to outside companies including Facebook without fully informing customers that's the case.
Zoom's software reported to Facebook whenever a Zoom user logged on for a conference call, a lawsuit filed Monday stated. After a user logged on, Zoom gave Facebook the person's customer information, including what device a person used to access Zoom, the device's model and the device's unique advertising identifier. “

Wether you are a facebook user or not. Not disclosed by Zoom.

Yep, I saw/heard about that, but that's a bit different from what Mr Downtown was saying.

I don't think there's any explicit protection against Zoom available yet.

No.

Zoom fixed that vulnerability last year.

There is a LOT of fear-mongering on this thread. Zoom is a terrific tool, and the 'security' breeches we see were designed to make it more user-friendly (except for the facebook thing, I admit).

If you're conferencing with your phone, don't take it with you on a bathroom break.
