The distribution of dots represent counties which are much smaller (by area) in the eastern half of the country.

You do know S Eastern CA, Nevada, Arizona, new mexico and Utah are mostly desert, right?

Boston, NYC, Philly, & DC are less cars, more public transit.
East has major international airline activity (JFK & Dulles come to mind).
Commuter airline traffic between NE & D.C.
Amtrak, NE Corridor.

All of the above are strictly guesses.

Also in Texas close to New Mexico border there is a vertical band of red dots very well defined.

Just so people appreciate the geographic enormity of the USA, the population center (the exact middle) of the country is located in Missouri.

The two centers are within 400 miles of one another, one is in Missouri the other in Kansas.

San Bernardino County is (almost exactly) twice as large as the state of Massachusetts
