Ought to be a necessary qualification for graduating high school, long before being president.

Fixed that for you.

Still useful for screening presidential candidates, but they are far from the only people needing this skill.

Not everyone can draw, but at minimum be able to name all the states -- and maybe know at least 80% of the capitols?

Not everyone can draw, but at minimum be able to name all the states -- and maybe know at least 80% of the capitols?

I can name all 50 states, in alphabetical order, in under 30 seconds.

Can you reverse that in under a minute - and how would we know?

I had a moment of personal glory in fourth grade, being the first in class to name all fifty states on a map.

It's been largely down hill since then.

She was guided only by her own ambition, and saw a chance to push a potential rival for the presidency out of her way.

“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

Yes, and a requirement to drawing them

and maybe know at least 80% of the capitols?

Not all that important except to politicians and businessmen.

Knowing the states and where they are, as in basic geography, giving one a wider perspective and appreciation of our bit of the world, is better than playing name games.

One needn't be an artist to draw the states' respective positions, as Franken demonstrated.

I’ve seen a video of him doing this at the State Fair a few years ago. IIRC, he called it a trick he learned to do.

I first saw Garrison Keillor do this trick six or seven years ago on YouTube - and I thought it was at a State Fair too. There are apparently a few mnemonics to make it easier to remember, though I never tried it myself.
