SHARE YOUR: favorite utility

Since we're all holed up, I figure it's time to share the stuff that's working for each of us.

Here's my favorite new'ish utility:

Horo [matthewpalmer.net]

Best free timer I've ever found.

I've used and needed egg timer type timers forever, and have used a bunch over the years, but with Catalina, my faves broke, so I spent way too much time looking for a the perfect egg-timer. After multiple downloads, I happened across Horo, which is absolutely perfect. It sits in the menubar, type, 30m for 30 minutes, can handle multiple timers, very lightweight and unobtrusive. Great for reminding to check the laundry, drive out to an appt, hop onto a zoom at 1pm, call back friend as promised.

And yes, for some, setting a reminder with Siri is what works for them.

Free version works just fine, the $6 paid simply adds a few preferences. I eventually upgraded, more to support the author. Free works perfectly forever.

Please share your latest favorite utility or app.

For me, utilities means "something that fixes my Mac".

So for me, Etrecheck, Onyx, Drive Genius.

Still waiting for the APFS-friendly version of Disk Warrior....

Audio Hijack-I recently used it to record audio from a radio station only available via webpage.

Airfoil-Airplay stopped working correctly for me in iTunes 12.8.2.3 so now I use Airplay to fill the house with music.

Bartender-cleans up the menu bar in the upper right corner

Capto-recently mentioned on the forum, works great for recording video and audio from a webpage.

iFlicks-Can convert video to mp4, add metadata, and add to iTunes. Can also do pre or post processing to change file based on rules.

HandbrakeBatch-Performs same job as Handbrake but to a bunch of files.

MuCommander-A opensource finder replacement. Very ugly but it's rename feature is way beyond anything the Finder can do.

PDF Merger and PDF Squeezer-self explanatory, works great

Bbedit-Today I mostly use it to convert rich text to plain text but it can do so much more.

Horo looks like exactly what I've been wishing existed for several years. Seemed like a mysterious omission that my computer's clock couldn't time my laundry.

Anyone have an alternative to TexEdit that they like? I've used TexEdit for decades as my simple note-taker and text processor. (If I want anything complex, I jump straight to InDesign. Word, which is always trying to outsmart me, can suck it.) But it looks like TexEdit is fading away, and won't have a 64-bit version when I finally do.

Are you sure about that?

tapdex (from yellowmug.com) is a free preference pane that's great for quick hotkey access to address book contact info. i'd be interested in alternatives y'all can suggest as the current version (4.0.3) goes back to at least 2010 and is i understand (from somewhere) that it won't work much longer (i'm using it with mojave). the yellowmug.com website says it's "retired."

i'll be glad to share if anyone's interested.

Ohh. I just caught that missing T, also. I thought Mr Downtown was referring to the Apple app, too.
