water usage up 50% - should I blame corona?
Posted by: mattkime

I got my water bill and its up 50% over last month. Has anyone else noticed something similar? I'm fairly certain we don't have any leaks. Perhaps its from being home so much.

Alcohol consumption is known to increase urination.

Just kidding, Matt. Although nextdoor here in MN, the liquor stores are apparently seeing great business.

I am fully expecting my utility bills to be higher since commencement of the stay-at-home order because, yes, I am spending more time at home.

Washing hands 20 times a day will do that...plus more cooking at home means doing more dishes.

Have you read your water meter to verify their numbers?

Five people stuck at home here, with longer showers, more dishes to wash, more meals to prepare, more deuces to drop.

I second the suggestions of 1) increased (and likely lengthened) handwashing, plus using the toilet at home 100% of the time is most of it....

We gets ours quarterly and the last one ended in March, so that is going to be a big shock for some people when their bill goes up 6x what it was before.

Wait what? Is their water usage increasing geometrically?

You're talking that old school, way out in the country, well-with-a-hand-pump action:

1. Place large washtub in the middle of the kitchen floor, usually on Saturday night.

2. Get a few pots of water heating up on the stove. As they heat up, pour them in the tub.

3. Line up the whole family and let them take their baths right there, one at a time for the older ones and two at a time for the younger ones. Add more hot water as needed.

4. After everyone has bathed, bail out as much bathwater from the tub as necessary and then drag the tub to the edge of the back porch and tip the rest of the water over the side.

That's the way they did it at my Great-Grandmother's house until the mid-to-late 70s, anyway.

I'm only showering once every 5-7 days on lock-down.

Even after runs, I don't shower.

Just wash my face and have a quick sponge bath.

Put on fresh underwear & deodorant.

I still take a bath once a month, whether I need it or not.

There ya go! On a good dry month, I hear you can scratch a small spot near your hairline and then peel the whole month's worth of accumulated body oils, schmutz, and shed skin cells off like the protective plastic on new electronics, all in one piece if you're really careful, thereby eliminating the need for a bath altogether. I did hear you could only do that if it's been dry though.
