I May Be the Last To Know™ - iPhone hidden scanner feature
Posted by: tuqqer

Well. iPhones have a scanner feature.

Granted, most of the time, a picture will do. But given that so many of us will be working from the home for the foreseeable future, there will be times that having a multiple-page, signable method on our phones is a good thing to know.

Full article is below, but here are the main details:

1. Open Notes app.
2. Open existing or new note.
3. Tap on the camera icon in the menu.
4. Choose "Scan Documents"
5. Scan as many pages as you want. You can also use the markup option and add your signature or input text. This is obviously handy if the document you scanned is a form you need to fill out.

Count me in too, for the longest time I’ve been just taking photos and manipulating them with the editing features.

It's not available on my 4S iOS9.35. What is the earliest version that has it because I want it on my next phone?

Thanks for the tip!

I shrugged my shoulders a bit when I read your post because I have a couple of apps that are pretty good at this (Scanner Pro and Genius Scan), but I rarely use them. Both do a great job on the scan, but whether they are saving to Files or syncing with Dropbox, something is lacking when it comes to user friendliness and integration. Saving something directly to Notes seems even easier.

It remains to be seen how much I'll use it, but I just scanned a document off my desk in nearly complete darkness, and it's immediately in Notes on my Mac.

I too, did not know this.

And now that I have an AirPrint capable printer, this is worthwhile news.

Occasionally, I would might have seen a feature that didn't do me any good, and forgot about it long ago.

But this is news to me.

I though this was going to be about scanning QR codes and was hoping to mention I use that almost frequently.

Well, color me ignorant. I'm running iOS 12.1.2 on my SE. I open Notes and can create a new note, but I don't see the camera icon anywhere.

in the lower right corner of the new note there is a + icon. tap it and a menu comes up one of which is the camera.

Dang that is cool. Thanks for sharing ! The regular Scanner apps do OCR though, which is helpful for search functionality.

The camera app can also act as a QR code scanner. Just open up your camera, get close to the QR code, and a box will appear and ask you about opening the code's link.

This came in handy for me just a few days ago when I needed to access additional information on my dryer (broken knob).

Very cool. Did not know that and just tried and it works flawlessly.

The most important feature to me is the ability to sign on the pdf and re-send it. The number of times I've resorted to printing, signing, rescanning - I am embarrassed to admit...

There actually is one (but nobody looks for it or reads it), web based or in iBook form.

I tried using this to scan a prescription bottle but the scan was nothing I would use. It was worth a try, though. Perhaps if the bottle was on a turntable it would have worked much better than me simply moving my iPhone around the bottle.
