Jacobs Kronung (made in Germany) is yummy, we have that every morning. Amazon has it, but we got a better deal from enjoybettercoffee.com.

I was introduced to Mount Hagen by this article:

[thewirecutter.com]

Every family member that I've had visit has also fallen in love with it

It's usually about $10 for a 3.53 oz jar, but prices are high on Amazon right now

If you have a local Whole Foods, they should have it at the normal price

If you're so inclined you can listen to this podcast where they come to a different conclusion

I'm a fan of Medaglia D'Oro instant espresso. It's pricey, though!

My father, who has been drinking coffee since the 1930's, swears by Nescafe Original. However, he says that American Nescafe is rubbish; it has to be imported from England.

My wife and I have some things we can't agree on, and coffee is one of them.
She also likes Nescafé. Now I have to look what kind it is.

I prefer freshly ground beans and my new Biatelli espresso maker.

Cafe Bustello is my first choice, if I can't get it then I use Pilon.

They are both marketed as instant espresso coffee but work well for a standard cup as well.

You might try Starbucks Via. It's not instant coffee. It's coffee in an instant.

Might have been right here on the forum a few years ago when I had the same question, but Cafe Bustelo was recommended to me and I keep kept a jar at work. It serves the purpose, as is available at some Target stores.

My "normal" brew is Starbucks Whole Bean French Roast made in a Cuisinart "Grind & Brew" drip coffee maker. While on the road, I tried "Nescafe Taster's Choice French Roast" crystals and, have found them to be almost as good! A 7oz glass jar runs ~ $9 at Walmart. Nestles claims 105 servings (I never bothered to count; I just add a heaping teaspoon full to a LARGE cup [~20oz] of cold water] and nuke for 5 minutes). I do add 1% milk once zapped. coffee smiley yum smiley

I stumbled onto Nescafe Nes in France a few years ago, and I carry it in my travel bag for emergencies. I find it quite tolerable.

I forgot, we had actually tried the Jacobs Kronung and the Mount Hagen at the same time. Both were excellent, and the Jacobs is significantly less expensive.

Another Medaglia d'Oro vote. Kinda pricey, but some markets around here carry it. I only use it in emergencies when I need to, or for the occasional baking opportunity.

Chopper,

Starbucks Via or Mount Hagen Instant. They're both surprisingly good and have a solid shelf-life. I always keep some of at least one of them on hand in case I don't have the five minutes necessary to brew a pot or the carafe (and filter holder) of my Bonavita is in the dishwasher. 'course, instant will come in handy in this day and age of the pandemic if I can't get ground coffee to brew. Starbucks Via should be readily available just about anywhere. I got the Mount Hagen via a recommendation from Wirecutter.

a frie3nd of mine - BIG TIME coffee junkie did a wide search for THE BEST instant coffee that can be bought. He decided that there is just no way to bring a lightweight espresso machine on the trail.

He finally settled on Starbux Columbian. I'm a tea drinker at home, but same problem - doing my tea on the trail was just too cumbersome so I go with this coffee too.

It's way better than most diner coffee. As gray says, it's NOT instant coffee (freeze dried coffee), it's just regular coffee ground super fine. It's EXPENSIVE! but it's the best.

my one complaint about the starbux stuff is its short shelf life. I would stock up when it's cheap, but I don't since it never has as much as a one year best buy date.

Hal,

Never an issue for me. Sounds like it's more of a problem of where/when you're buying it rather than an issue with the product itself.

As I have experienced many times, coffee is a matter of taste and to some degree what you are used to. So you would have to try different brands. Tasters Choice is a "higher grade" of Nescafe and both the regular and the French Roast varieties are decent. Starbucks Via Italian Roast is my favorite but if you like Colombian coffee (I generally do not) may not be the best choice for you. And it is way more expensive than instant coffee.

Speaking of coffee, can anyone point me to a medium roast Honduran coffee. We’ve been drinking IKEA nrdium roast and think it’s great, but now that IKEA has closed it’s stores, we can’t get any more. We are down to our last four pounds and that will only last us around four weeks. You can buy everything IKEA online except for food items. I also miss their braised pork shanks in their cafeteria. Yummmm.

Edit: and I mean a coffee that won’t bankrupt me. Under $9 a pound, way under.

My search is even harder, as I can only drink decaf coffee. The only decaf instant coffees that I find decent are the Starbucks VIA Italian roast decaf (hard to find in grocery stores, only at Starbucks) and Mount Hagen decaf (also hard to find). Last time I found Mount Hagen was in World Market, and that was on clearance. Amazon has it, but you have to buy a large quantity (six bottles, I believe) to get anywhere close to a decent price.

The price issue with Mount Hagen and Amazon is hopefully temporary due to the pandemic

It's usually ~$10/bottle - I've been buying it from Amazon for the past few years at that price

as sometimes suitable compromise, you might try cold-brewing a highly concentrated batch and storing it in the fridge. Cold brew is always less bitter and with the addition of water, microwaves right up to an acceptable cup.
