chest freezer or upright freezer? what else to look for?

I am thinking about getting a freezer in the basement, not yet sure how large, and what type: chest or upright? I would imagine chest freezer would be more efficient, less cold air ti escape when you open it. Maybe I am wrong.

I guess I want one with some wheels/casters to move it around it I don't like the placement. My current fridge has about 20 cubic feet I guess, so something around 10 cubic feet would probably be the right size for us (4 people). But again I am not sure.

let me know what I should consider when looking for various models, sales, etc.

What do you want to do with it?

Upright, for sure. Chests are a total pain to get stuff out off, and to see what's where, because some stuff is buried under other stuff.

At least 10 cubic feet. I think 16 to 20 cubic feet is the sweet spot.

Probably want automatic defrosting.

On those crime shows, always seems like a missing spouse winds up in a chest freezer, so you might want to check out the legroom before purchasing.

As the owner of a chest freezer, I totally agree.
When this one dies, it'll be upright or nothing.

4 people, a 10cf upright is the min. btw, this is not the best time to buy.
Demand for freezers by hoarders morons has driven the prices way up.
The little 5.2cf I got two years ago is now twice the price @ HD.

Upright 20 cubic foot went dow last month . Was 70% full . Bought a 14 ft chest freezer only 1/3 full . Unless you arestacking containers in an upright 305 of space is wasted .

Chest freezers keep their cool. Only positive.
Can’t even find one locally. Sears of all places is the only one coming up with shipping and they say shipping delivery is June 30 or July 15.

I agree with others asking what you want to use it for. I started with a chest freezer I bought used in the before times and loved having but wanted more space. They’re efficient but difficult to dig through. Our freezers primarily store meat bought brim farmers but it’s nice to be able to stash Costco sized bags of frozen veggies. We’re two adults and two little ones and aim to have a year supply off meat with some space left over. Oh, my upright freezer was bought used as well. If I was shopping new I’d consider 20 cu ft.

first of all, auto defrosting will use more electricity and can freezer burn more easily.

That's all I have got for now.

Upright for convenience.

Look for a statement that the warranty also covers lost food. I have no idea whether such statements exist but when our Sears freezer died within warranty the repair guy had us estimate the lost food amount and included it and Sears sent us a check.

Yep, the latter was a problem with the upright freezer at mom's old house.

Never a problem with the large chest freezer (15 cuft. for $25 from yard sale) we have now.

the fact they are out our stock gives me time to do more research and think about what I want.

I saw some units that are more flexible, they could be run in refrigerator or in freezer more. That seemed interesting, any thoughts about those?

If you are going to keep that much frozen food, I'd say your next purchase should be a generator.

I have neither.

Self defrosting, while handy, shortens the life of frozen food. Freezing items that aren't sold as frozen need to be packaged properly for freezing. We use a vacuum packer to do so. One of the keys is to remove air from the packaging as moisture drops out as the air is cooled.

We have a little chest freezer in the basement for supermarket sale overflow, Costco trips, etc. It's relatively small. Size of a dishwasher. The only control on it is one dial for the temp/on/off. Keep it simple.

I live in Sacramento, where summer time temperatures can exceed 110 F. I have no idea how hot it gets on a day like that in my garage. Would I end up paying stratospheric prices for electricity in the summer, or would a freezer even work in this kind of environment?

We get 118 here in Coachella Valley. (109 yesterday. SoCal Desert - Near Coachella Festival)
Garage fridge and chest freezer work fine.

I say look at the craigslist ads and find yourself the freezer you like. I do like that you can convert a good sized chest freezer into a beautiful Keezer (to store and serve kegs of beer) fairly easily. I have done it.

Good luck. Was in the market recently and could not find anything available (your area) - people hoarding food have bought them all.

Yup. Try checking inventory at more rural stores. I found any remaining inventory to be usually there.
