How is your pile of of unused cables looking these days?

argh...

I went looking for an rca split cable the other day and that meant pretty much looking at every single cable that I own to find the right thing.

Found it... it didn't help what I was trying to accomplish.

I REALLY should just throw all this @#$%& out - or maybe donate it, but let's be serious - who would want it?

I just did the something looking for a Firewire 800 cable.

Found one plugged it in on one end.
Went to plug in the other other end and no go.
WTF?
Turns out it was a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable.
I didn't remember there was such a thing.
Had to go to the next box to find FW800 to FW800.

Next week week time to at least sort the boxes of cables by type.
Firewire
USB
Ethernet
Audio
Other

Steve

Need the FW800 to FW800 to put an old Mac into Target Disk mode.

I have a small box full in a cabinet near my chair. And a big box in the basement. I figure if I don't use anything in the big box over 4-5 years most of it can be dumped, after going through it quickly, just in case. I've dumped it several times and have never had a need to get a cable/connector back (knock on wood...).

Well, there's the box with (mostly) computer cables, and the box with only audio cables....

Was in the same boat about 6 months ago... 3 big containers... ethernet, phone, SCSI and Ultra SCSI, coax, USB, VGA, DVI, speaker wire, some random RCAs and several powerstrips.

Sent 75% to goodwill -- but you are right, I doubt if anyone will want them, prob should have ewasted them (dunno if thats even possible)

I kept practically nothing. Couple of good power strips, some extension cords and 2 USB cables and thats about it. Not even sure why I kept the USB cables. Everything we have is wireless.

And cables are cheap... $5 or less... so figured if I ever *really* needed one Id just buy it.

Im in the just get rid of it camp =)

Ive got a white 2006 20" iMac, AL 20" 2008 iMac, and a 15" iLamp with USB 2... Im struggling to part with them... but its really just time for them to go.

I have maybe 20lbs of component (red green blue) cables. HDMI pretty much relegated all of them to the dusty basement tub-o-wires a decade ago.

I've segregated the old cables by type.

I just have this nagging feeling that I'll need a SCSI cable one day.

I have a dozen or so internal and another dozen or so external SCSI cables. Guess what? I got into retro computing and am actually using them.

I have loads of computer and A/V cables. Boxes and drawers of them. Last sorted about 5 years ago when all the SCSI-aged stuff was jettisoned, but Firewire was still useful. Haven't used FW since, that's all gotta go save one of each JIC.

I recently halved my home office space so a second workstation could be set up for Little Zealand to do his HW during the day and Mrs. Zealand can do her work at night. That came at the cost of my junk storage space so that old stuff really needs to go...

Pile, what is this pile you speak of? My unused cables are too scattered to become a pile.

S. Pupp mentioned retro computing. I have an old MicroVax that I will be working on after retiring in the next year. Have to dig out some of the old DEC SCSI cables and verify part numbers, they used some non-standard system end connections before those got full industry standards.

my pile is quite disorganized at the moment. took me almost an hour to find the 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable to connect my camcorder a couple weeks ago.

I have a closet just for parts and cables.

My cables are tied and organized in stacking Akro-bins. Hard drives and enclosures are also in bins.

Adapters and large parts are organized into smaller bins.

Screws, flash drives, SD cards, batteries and other small stuff are organized in tiny storage-drawers in a nice plastic enclosure.

Specialized tools are arranged on shelves with dividers.

Everything's labeled.

It was a summer project about 4 years ago.

Still have a few bins and several plastic drawers of various cables. They've been sorted and marked for many years. No real pile(s) anymore (except inside the bins/drawers). Bins are mostly electrical; surge strips, extension cords, cpu/monitor power cables, etc., and old school A/V cabling. I regularly occasionally provide cables to others, but one of these years I'm gonna cull the herd to a more manageable head count.

My wife has used COVID to be an excuse to threaten me into removing 90% of my unused cables. It will happen this summer...

I've got a ton of cables, and need to get some P-Touch tape that wraps around a cable to form a tag, or something to label cable.

And preferably each end for cables such as my FW800 to FW400 and Type A USB to USB-C, etc.

I want to hang them, or at least the longer ones, instead of coiling them.

Audio, video, computing, AC...

This thread is useless without pictures! This sounds like an art exhibition I would like to see as long as my wife does not see it and require new work...

Every few years, I'll put a big box of random cables out at a garage sale and wait for the right person to show up... what usually happens is I'll put a $5 price tag on the entire box. People will look through it all looking for one specific type of cable, and I'll sell it to them for a quarter. Eventually I'll convince someone to take it all for a buck or two.

Most of my "extra" cables are in one of those Akro Mills 12 Gallon containers that have the flip top lids. What concerns me most are the newer USB-C cables. I believe there are about SIX DIFFERENT USB-3 / USB-C "standards" and, although physically, any USB-C plug will fit in any USB-C port, some USB-C cables have PROPRIETARY controller chips that can actually damage a device they were not intended for. Of course NOBODY labels their USB-3 / USB-C cables so, once cables are commingled, it's a crap shoot as to whether the cable / device combination will work at the proper speed & power or, just fry the device. I'd like to know what knucklehead engineer designed such a mess. angry villagers smiley

That's what my P-Touch is for.

I've got mine labeled for power, high-power, data, and Thunderbolt capability.

lots of USB A and Cat5 6' stuffed in one drawer.
and a handful of other singles.
midi, FW, video, audio. But I cut it way back a couple years back.
But think it's time to dump some USB A and Cat5 ... again.
