Safari: How Stop 'Top Sites' Window?

There doesn't seem to be any way to turn off 'Top Sites' in Safari Preferences. The darned thing keeps popping up even though I make sure it's not on 'New windows open with' and 'New tabs open with'.

Safari version 12.1.2; running OS 10.12.6 on my iMac.

Can you upgrade to v13? I remember being bugged by that, too. In 13, you go to the General tab, choose anything other than Top sites in both the New window opens with, AND the New tab opens with.

Will v13 run under OS 10.12.6?

The 'Open with' options don't have Top Sites in them. But Top Sites still comes up whenever I want to type (or copy) a URL in the search field. Drives me nuts.

Oh right, v13 will not run on Sierra, only High Sierra and beyond.

Not sure of the fix, but I remember my work around was this: hit Command-N to open a new window, hit Command-L to get my cursor into the URL field, then either paste or type in the website or search text I needed. That Command-L changes the whole game.

Safari: How Stop 'Top Sites' Window?

Enter "top sites" in Safari's Help menu Search field and select "See your top sites in Safari on Mac".

I never see Top Sites.

My settings:

Safari opens with: A new window
New Windows open with: Empty Page
New Tabs open with: Empty Page
Top Sites shows: 6 sites

Safari 12.1.2
macOS OS 10.12.6

Maybe you need to toss Safari prefs and set it up again.

My settings are the same. When I click in the URL field, I get 36 (!) Top Sites.

Can't find Safari prefs (plist) in Library. Where izzit?

UPDATE: Found problem! In Preferences, under Search/Smart Search Field, I unclicked 'Show Favorites', and that did it.

No need to toss prefs.

Good find. Can't believe I couldn't remember how I finally figured that out. It drove me crazy for months, too.
