No internet connection via ethernet
Posted by: clyde

Network Preferences shows ethernet not connected. No ethernet entry in Network Preferences.

By connecting the ethernet cable to another computer, ethernet appears in Network Preferences, and computer connects to internet. Cable must be good.

Folks @ ISP say problem is likely a bad connector on the iMac or a "defective driver."

Other possibilities? What to do?

There are two types of ethernet cables; one is straight thru and one is a crossover. Most routers and switches now days will accept either one, but some devices are picky. Unless the cable you're using as worked before when connected to your ISP I'd try different cables. You can also use an Ohm meter to verify the type of cable you have so that you know you've tried both types with your ISP connection.

restart?
DFA
Onyx if you're inclined.
toss network prefs - user/you/prefs/com.apple.networkConnect.plist
restart Safe mode (shift down at the bong).

Network Preferences shows ethernet not connected. No ethernet entry in Network Preferences.

I'm confused as to how can it show that it's not connected, if there is no entry for Ethernet.

You can try adding a network service in the Network Preferences, by clicking the + button at the bottom and then selecting the interface from the dropdown list.

I once resolved a similar issue where the connection was not working by deleting the Ethernet service from the list by clicking the - button, then just adding it back again. No other changes to the configuration, just a booched service I guess.

Restarted—made no difference

Restarted in Safe mode—no difference

What's "DFA"?

Not familiar with Onyx

On "toss network prefs" (user/you/prefs/com.apple.networkConnect.plist)—is that a sequence of menus?

sorry Disk Fits Aid in Utilities. Run it on the start-up drive.
If it comes up healthy, great. If there are fixes made. Restart the Mac and try the connect again.

that is the directory path to com.apple.networkConnect.plist
kind of like a driver, but not.

But with a Safe restart, kind of doubt that is the issue.

But what mikebw suggests is a good idea to try.

May be a good idea to post which iMac and OS from under the Apple, "About this Mac".

I suppose it could be the connector on the iMac if it has been subject to a lot of physical activity. But I doubt it.

You could, very carefully, soak a Qtip or foam tip in isopropyl and swab the tines on the RJ connector of the iMac, by pushing the Qtip in with a light touch and picking it up before extracting it. That would clear off any oxidation that may have occurred, but I also very much doubt this.
Or just give the RJ a few cycles of the old in and out.

iMac late 2013, OS 10.14

Ran DFA, results OK

Would delete Ethernet from the Network list, then add it back, if ethernet option were there. But there is no ethernet option in the list.

Problem occurred when I tried to change DNS as advised by VPN. I clicked something wrong and got Not connected message. Had not disconnected ethernet cable.

Entered "com.apple.networkConnect.plist" URL on another computer, got this: "We can’t connect to the server at com.apple.networkconnect.plist."

Examined ethernet connector on back of the iMac—looks pristine.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I'm stuck; any ideas?

OK, first things first;
If you are not seeing an Ethernet connection in your Network preferences, you need to click the little plus sign and add one.

Second;
You don't enter "com.apple.networkConnect.plist" in a browser. It's a file name. Open your Hard Drive. Open the Users folder. Open you user folder. Open your Library folder. Open the Preferences folder. In there, you will find "com.apple.networkConnect.plist". Move it to a folder on your desktop for safekeeping (you'll probably throw it away since your computer will generate a new one... but I like to keep a "backup" while I'm messing with stuff.

Wouldn't worry about doing the second thing until you actually have an Ethernet connection showing in your Network Preferences pane. Let's fix that first, since I can guarantee it's not going to work without it.

errrr, what VPN? That's an unusual request.

Goog "flush DNS OSX 10.14".

com.apple.networkConnect.plist is not a URL. It's a pref in your sys folder.

But forget that. Flush the DNS.

And I assume you tried.

Tried to add ethernet to list. It appeared—in red, not connected.

VPN is Surfshark

Will flush VPN later, must tackle other projects just now

How about (Apple menu)/About this Mac/System Report/Ethernet Cards?

Tried DNS flush. No go.

Quit Term mode, reopened Term and tried again with password immediately after last character of command. Still no go.

Tried a third time, not sure whether password was directly after command or on next line, but it worked—computer was online!

Then, in Network settings, cobbled something and lost the connection. Ethernet shows disconnected.

Should there be a single space between the command and the password?

Closer but not yet at finish line…must get the right sequence of command. space, and password.

Grateful for the help! Seems certain that problem is not hardware…

There's a list with 15 entries of bus, vendor ID, etc., etc.

What would I do with that info?

Did this:

1. In Term mode, copied/pasted sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder;sleep 2;
2. Hit Enter.
3. On next line, entered password.
4. Hit Enter.
No go.

Then tried this:
1. In Term mode, copied/pasted sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder;sleep 2;
2. Entered password at end of command
3. Hit Enter.
No go.

Something’s weird; what should I do??

I mean that I was elated and did something in Network Preferences—probably checking type of connection—and lost connection

But it had connected until I screwed up. .

I'm no network guru, but wouldn't logging in as a different user get rid of the VPN weirdness?

the 1st method is correct. Dunno why it didn't take.
What do you mean "no go".
You saw nothing happen or ... ?

And you used your admin password? The one what you log-in with?
Assuming you do use an admin/log-in pw ....

Sure the password is right? Upper/lower case whatever?
I've certainly made that mistake a few times .....

Well, I wanted to see if your system "saw" the ethernet hardware, which it does, which suggests to me that the ethernet "card"/chip hasn't failed in some way.

So I'd pursue the other possibilities. Maybe make a new user and see if they can get a connection.

Flushing the DNS worked. Still not certain how, but it's working. Entering password after the command or pressing Enter first—it's as delicate as dragonfly wings.

Now that it's working right—I think—I copied all those addresses and settings.

Thanks mucho!

pdq, I probably ought to go to Users & Groups to coordinate new user and password. Yes?

Does alternate user arrangement let computer connect to internet while denying access to personal files?

One user cannot access the other users files, only their Public Dropbox; and at that, blind.

Each User has there own Home and all the folders within it.
You can change Users on the fly, but that requires a pw.

OBTW, that Dropbox is not the same as the app Dropbox.

Did you flush the new user or the original?

Yes, you can add a new user in Users and Groups. But my suggestion was for when you inexplicably couldn’t get the ethernet working.

Now that it’s working, I don’t know why you’d want/need to add a new user.
