In Other Space News: Virgin Orbit's first Launch.... not quite "nominal".

Whelp.... Yesterdays first test launch coulda gone better - but also coulda gone worse.
Things went great for the "drop the rocket from the 'Cosmic Girl' 747" phase...
And, the breakaway to get Cosmic Girl away from the liquid fueled rocket - Also went swimmingly.

Then, rocket ignition went "so-so"... It seems observers on the ground could see the plume from the rocket, saw that it was far too orange colored to be running properly...

Then, thing went really pear-shaped... LauncherOne gained around 10,000 feet in altitude, then radar showed a "cloud of debris descending through 20,000 feet".

Cosmic Girl and all crew returned safely to the Mojave Spaceport.

So far, the official word is "the mission was terminated a few seconds into the flight". So, by inference, it was probably the Range Safety Officer pushing the "Big Red Button" that turned it into a "descending cloud of debris".

The assumption is that the test payload and the "ride along" Cube Sat did not survive the rapid unscheduled disassembly of the LauncherOne rocket.

Both Elon Musk of SpaceX and the CEO of RocketLab have tweeted their condolences on the sub-optimal outcome, and their encouragement to keep going.

Disappointing, but par for the course in rocketry. Be it the early space program of most countries to the more recent efforts by private corporations, the road to development is marked by many such failures.

I wish the forum had a better way of resizing photos. I always forget the code to downsize images.

People should know to right-click on that bad boy and open it in a new tab.

I just did that.

Sometimes I open a new window instead.

But when I post a pic, I try to resize so nobody has to.

I did forget recently, but in my defense I was really sleepy.

I'm glad there's no auto resizing.

This means I can make a pic any size I want, within limits.

With some kind of auto-resizing, that wouldn't be possible.

It would be nice if our forum software allowed us to determine the viewable size or to just make it fit. But I'm always ascared at the code being tampered with since it works just fine now.
