Richard Herd, ‘Seinfeld’ Actor Who Played Mr. Wilhelm, Dies at 87

.....Veteran character actor Richard Herd, best known for portraying Mr. Wilhelm on “Seinfeld,” died on Tuesday at his Los Angeles home of complications from cancer. He was 87.

The Boston native broke into show business as a stage actor in New York. He made his film debut in 1970’s “Hercules in New York.” Herd was hired as Richard Long’s replacement for the part of Watergate burglar James McCord in Alan J. Pakula’s “All the President’s Men.”

Herd’s big-screen credits included “The China Syndrome” (1979) “F.I.S.T.” (1979), “The Onion Field” (1979), “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (1987) and “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” (1997). He portrayed Supreme Commander John in the 1983 NBC miniseries “V” and its sequel; the Klingon L’Kor on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”; Admiral William Noyce on “seaQuest 2032”; and Admiral Owen Paris on “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Renegades.”

Herd made 11 appearances on “Seinfeld” as Mr. Wilhelm, the inept New York Yankees exec who supervised George Costanza (Jason Alexander) after he landed a job as an assistant to the traveling secretary.

“He was always doing things that never got done and always going over to Mr. Steinbrenner and apologizing to him,” Herd said of Wilhelm in a 2016 interview.

He was also active in the Screen Actors Guild and served as the 3rd national vice president.

Herd is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia Crowder Herd. Survivors also include his daughter Erica, son Rick and stepdaughter Alicia.

RIP.......?!

Kinda looks like Scott Wilson, too.

I remember him mostly from his 80's roles.

I'd forgotten until the recent T.J. Hooker marathon on Decades, that he'd played Shatner's boss.

He was also in a few Star Trek roles, most notably playing Adm. Paris, Tom Paris' father in ST:Voyager.

And then there was this, which gave my generation nightmares for awhile...

In addition to his acting, Herd fancied himself as an artist, and traded wares w/ other wannabe showbiz artist types. When one of his very famous trade mates passed away shortly after the turn of the century, the auction house client I did the database for, handled the estate sale. I bought Herd's painting that had his inscription to his buddy, acknowledging the trade. Spousal unit liked the colors; it's of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sad to hear of his passing, R.I.P., Mr. Artiste.
