Labor is prob negotiable... maybe try $2000?

have you priced doors? Prob near $1000.

I dont seed anything about finishing work... making sure the door looks like it belongs.

By barn doors, is he talking about the kind that slide to open on rollers above the door? I thought you wanted French doors.

Or is it pocket doors? I would expect either those or French doors. I cannot picture in my mind what is meant by “glass barn door” ... ?

i was wrong, I thought wife wanter French doors, but she now came up with these "barn" doors. or maybe I never paid attention to her wish. Anyway, the cost is reasonable. I thought it will be much more.

After reading the description, I would have guessed a little higher. I think that's a very reasonable price for everything they are doing.

If I understand this correctly, the contractor is either enlarging or creating a door opening. They need to build a temporary support structure (shoring) on either side of the wall, cut the opening and install a header (LVL), install the doors and finish the opening.

I expected the materials cost to be significantly higher. Labor seems very reasonable. There's a fair amount of work that needs to be done to make this look nice.

"HVAC work is not included"

That seems like a potential can of worms. Even if that vent isn't in the area where the opening will be made, the sliding doors might block the vent when they're in the open position depending on which side/room the doors are installed in.

Based on the pictures posted on the last thread, I don't think barn doors truly fit the aesthetic of the rooms.

I agree. I think white classic French doors would be what you need. However, I would vote to leave it open. I think you'll get tired of opening and closing the door, as well as cleaning it.

And if they're going to be open all the time, then just the archway with no doors might be better.

I really don't like the look of that visible track on the barn doors. Pocket doors look nicer as sliders, but you'd need even more in-wall space for them.

I really agree more and more with what MikeF said. The pictures show rooms that have been perfectly designed by someone, and the barn doors just don't fit (in my opinion.)

Given the style and aesthetics of the house and the rooms you have shown in the pictures, the doors you have shown really don’t work well. I find it visually jarring, and they appear out of place. I know, it’s what SHE wants. They appear much more modern than the rest of the rooms, particularly if you stay with the black trim. You show french doors in one of the rooms and I cannot see a way to make the two door styles work. Perhaps a French style barn door? I don’t know if such a thing even exists or if it even should.

French doors are classic; barn doors are trendy; which one is likely to be appealing later down the road, say in 5-10 years?

not sure where you have seen images of the doors. I don't recall posting any images of the doors. The doors shown above are posted by someone else.

What she wants is this

[glass-door.us]

She knows it does not fit the style of the house. She wants a balance between the old style and a modern style. I won't say NO. it's her dream. Let her be.

After seeing the door picture you just posted, I'd say it's in good hands.

What I was going to say -- is how tall are the ceilings?

It looks like the hardware might take up 8" -- and the opening might need to be lower than you think to make room for said hardware. And by association, the door height.

Perhaps picking a door first might be prudent to make sure they leave enough room for mounting...

If they built the opening to traditional french door sizes the barn door might not fit.

I would think that part of the goal would be to make them look like they were part of the house, as opposed to not?

I apologize for posting a "barn door" in a style that very few people could see was just an example of non-pocket sliding doors, that did not fit into the previous owners taste. It is very easy to change the style and height of the doors, and even hide the sliding mechanism with a wooden valence or soft fabrics.
